II. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The Department of Education’s final two years of
career-focused education are known as Senior High School
SHS. It is under Republic Act No. 10533 or the Enhanced
Basic Education Act of 2013, students needed to finish
Kindergarten, Grades 1 to 6 in Elementary School, Grades 7
to 10 of Junior High School, and Grades 11 to 12 for Senior
High School. Before enrolling in senior high, students have
to choose a strand first. There are five strands in our
school, STEM, HUMMS, ABM, TVL-(Agri-Fishery Arts, Home-
Economics (HE), Information And Communications Technology
(ICT), Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) and ARTS & DESIGN.
Picking on these strands is one of the most complicated
decisions a student will undertake.
Appiah Et Al (2020) discovered that 59 (16.7%) had
trouble choosing a strand since they didn’t know which jobs
they were interested in. It is crucial that students make
their own strand or track decisions since it will affect
everything they do for the rest of their life.
In choosing a strand, suitability to the interest of
the students is given importance. Students must known on
what degree to pursue in college, one that interest them and
must also fit their abilities so that it will not be hard
for them to choose the right career path. By making a wise
career decision can help one’s self build the life they
want.
According to Supeer 2005, the students should first
become aware of the need for a career. So every graduating
student needs a wise choice in decision making.
Bautista (1997) stated that at this stage, a student
must take important and vital decision in the selection of a
career which will determine his/her future success. It’s
important to note that while selecting a strand is a
significant decision, making a thoughtful decision at an
early stage can provide a solid foundation and set you on a
path that aligns with your aspirations and goals.
There are various factors that affect track and strand
preferences of Grade 10 students such as Familial Influence,
Personal Interest, Financial Ability, Location, Job
Opportunities, and Academic Standing. First is Familial
Influence, the effect of the family members of a certain
learner in choosing their preferred track or strand for
senior high school. Next, Personal Interest is the effect of
the preference of the learner on choosing the track or stand
for senior high school inclined with his/her hobbies or
passion. Financial Ability, the capacity of the learner to
support his/her needs in school that could affect his/her
decision in choosing the track or strand for senior high
school.
Location, is the state of the learner to have easy
access in choosing their track or strand which may include
the location or distance of the learner from his/her
academic performance. The fifth factor, which is Job
Opportunities it may allow you to live comfortably and
provide stability for yourself and your family. A job can be
important, as finding fulfillment in work can be important
to our overall well-being. And lastly, Academic Standing is
based on both the term grade point average and the overall
average of the students.

III. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

1. What are the main factors that affect the students
preference of grade 10 students choosing their strand in
terms of:
a. Familial Influence
b. Personal Interest
c. Financial Ability
d. Location
e. Job Opportunities
f. Academic Standing

IV. METHODOLODY

A. DATA GATHERING INSTRUMENT

The researchers will utilize a questionnaire from Buan,
et. al 2021 entitled “Students Profiling And Its Effects On
Choosing What Strand To Take For Senior High School” as a
primary tool to collect and describe the data. The Grade 10
participants were provided an identical survey question
through a Google Form link.
B. DATA ANALYSIS TOOL
The researchers used frequency and weighted mean to
identify the Factors Affecting the Preference of Grade 10
Students in Choosing Their Strand in Mangatarem National
High School. The Likert Scale to interpret the weighted mean
point averages of each item.
⅀ fx
AWM=
n
Where:
AWM= the average weighted mean
f= the frequency of each weight
x= the weight or level of each indicator
n= the total number of respondents

⅀ = to indicate summation of a set or series

Table 1. Scale of the Verbal Description on the Factors

Affecting The Preference Of Grade 10 Students In Choosing
Their Strand
Weight Mean Range Description
5 4.20-5.00 Strongly Agree
4 3.40-4.19 Agree
3 2.60-3.39 Neutral
2 1.80-2.59 Disagree
1 1.00-1.79 Strongly Disagree

This table shows the basis for the verbal description

of the factors affecting the preference of the grade 10
students in choosing their strand. The scale and the verbal
interpretation were based by Buan et.al. 2021.
Categories Weighted Mean Verbal Description

A. Familial
Influence 3.57 Agree

B. Personal
Interest 3.39 Neutral

C. Financial
Ability 3.26 Neutral

D. Location 3.21 Neutral

E. Job
Opportunities 3.36 Neutral

F. Academic
Standing 3.57 Agree
V. PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
This part shows a summary of the collected data, result
after computation and interpretation of the result.

Table 2. Factors Affecting the Academic Performance of

Students

This table shows the 6 Categories, Weighted Mean to

present the average scores for each categories and Verbal
Description to provides a descriptive interpretation of the
weighted mean. There are two highest weighted mean in this
table, the Familial Influence(3.57) and the Academic
Standing (3.57).

The Grand Mean in table 2 is 3.39. Therefore, the

factors affecting the preference of grade 10 students in
choosing their strand. This means that the result of grade
10 learners, the factors affecting in choosing their strands
is Neutral. This means that they do not have a strong
preference towards any particular academic.
In addition, the categories with the greatest mean is
the Familial Influence, with a mean of 3.57 and Academic
Standing, with a mean of 3.57. According to the study of
Maccoby 1984, the relationship between two family members is
a developing one, with each member of the relationship
affecting the other member overtime. Based on the term grade
point average and the overall average of the students is
defined by the Students GPA.
