CELT-P Module 4 – Portfolio task

Module 4 – Resources for learning in the primary classroom


Portfolio task – Plan, teach and evaluate a coursebook activity.
Task focus – Making more effective use of your coursebook; adapting materials for
learners.

Procedure

Review the content of the module, in particular Lessons 1, 4 and 7 of Module 4 on


evaluating, selecting and adapting coursebook materials.
You can do this by:
o Going back and looking again at some sections in the lessons in the online module.
o Reading your own notes.
o Talking to other teachers.
o Doing some more reading or research.

Select an activity in your coursebook which you think needs to be adapted for your
learners. Think about the aims of the activity and about how you can make it more useful
or interesting for your learners.

Plan a lesson which includes the activity you have chosen (remember to think about
interaction patterns for each stage):
o Prepare a lead-in to the activity/topic to get learners interested in the topic.
o Choose vocabulary that you need to pre-teach to help the learners do the activity,
and plan how you will pre-teach it.
o Prepare tasks to adapt the activity from the coursebook for your learners.

Complete Part 1 of the Portfolio task template:


o Provide details of the coursebook activity, the adapted activity and your class.
o Write the aim for learners, e.g. the language or skills learners will practise.
o Write the stage aim for the activity you adapted, e.g. Does it involve vocabulary,
grammar, listening, reading, speaking or writing? What outcome do you want for
your learners?
o Write the procedures you will follow for each stage.
o Complete the interaction patterns template to show how learners will work at each
stage.

Teach your lesson and reflect on it, then complete Part 2 of the Portfolio task template.
This includes your reflections on adapting coursebook activities, action points for adapting
coursebook activities in the future and a checklist of evidence you need to submit.

Upload:
o The coursebook page with the activity you adapted.
o The adapted activity.
o Any additional materials used in the lesson.
o The completed Portfolio task template.
