CELT-S Module 6 – Portfolio task

Module 6 – Planning language learning

Portfolio task – Plan, teach and evaluate a listening lesson.
Task focus – Writing a full lesson plan for a listening skills lesson.

Procedure

Review the content of Module 6 Lessons 1–6 on Planning a lesson.

You can do this by:
o Going back and looking again at some sections in the lessons in the online module.
o Reading your own notes.
o Talking to other teachers.
o Doing some more reading or research.

Select a recording to use with your class, or a text to read aloud to your class, to develop their gist
and detailed listening skills. Choose a topic you think your learners will be interested in. The text
can be from your coursebook, supplementary material or an authentic text. Remember that the
aims of the lesson for the learners are listening for a general understanding of the text and listening
for more detail; this should not be a language-focused lesson.

Plan a lesson which includes the recording or text you have chosen:
o Prepare a pre-listening activity which will get learners interested in the topic of the
recording/text.
o Choose vocabulary from the recording/text which you need to pre-teach to help the learners
understand the recording, and plan how you will pre-teach it.
o Prepare a gist listening activity for the learners to get a general understanding of the
recording/text.
o Prepare a detailed listening activity to help learners understand most of the recording/text.
o Prepare a post-listening activity related to the topic of the recording/text to help learners
develop speaking or writing skills.

Complete Part 1 of the Portfolio task template. This is the CELT-S lesson plan template with
details of the class and the listening lesson.

Teach your lesson and reflect on it, then complete Part 2 of the Portfolio task template. This
includes your reflections on completing a lesson plan, action points for producing a lesson plan in
the future and a checklist of evidence you need to submit.

Upload:
o Any coursebook/supplementary book page you used.
o The listening text you chose.
o The tasks/materials you used in the lesson.
o The completed Portfolio task template.
