OBSERVATION
DISCTRIBTION OF PEOPLES BUYING BEHAVIORS

I spent around an hour in the supermarket observing people’s

behavior, regarding their purchases of candy, chocolate and other
unhealthy snacks and beverages. I have noticed that in addition to
the snacks having their own aisle, they also have small stands in
the cashier and at the end of some aisles. I noticed that most
people do not purchase the snacks from the aisle but from the
stands in the cashier then from the ones at the end of aisles. I saw
that people were impulsively buying snacks. Furthermore, I saw a
few children ask for snacks from their parents when they pass by
the snacks. I have concluded that the store intentionally places
these stands to attract the attention of the shop goers and
especially their kids. Also, I have noticed that most of the shop
goers are not Saudi families or family members seeing that makes
me believe that most people send their drivers or house maids to
the store to but the groceries. I also saw less people buying large
quantities of groceries which shows that in this specific
supermarket most people live either alone or have a small family.
ANALYSIS AND TIPS

CANDY:

I have noticed that the candy aisle is in the middle of the store
between all the other essential items and at the counter on each
cashier’s desk.

WHY:

I believe they have placed the candy there to distract the shop
goes and especially their children as they are shopping because
each shop goer will pass this aisle. They have also placed the
candy next to the cashier for people to impulsively buy as they are
waiting for their turn to the register.

TIP:

I suggest not taking children shopping as they are easily

distracted and will insist on buying the candy which in some cases
might cause a scene.

BISCUITS:

The biscuits aisle is close to the frozen foods pantry which most
people go for.

WHY:

I believe they are there to entice the shopper of grabbing an

unhealthy snack because most people go for frozen foods as they
are easy to prepare and cook.

TIP:

A good tip to limit your purchases of unhealthy snacks is to limit

yourself to only buying 1 snack per visit this allows you to be
mindful of what you purchase regarding the unnecessary
purchases.

SOFT DRINKS:

Most people love drinking soft drinks with their meals, so they are
placed accordingly based on that fact.

WHY:

Soft drinks are placed next to the vegetables and fruits which are
needed for almost every meal you can prepare seeing the soft
drinks close by might entice you to purchase.

TIP:

The best way to avoid purchasing fresh juice before anything else
which will make you mindful of the beverage choice you have
already decided which will psychologically make you avoid the
unnecessary purchase of these beverages.
DESIGN RECOMMENDATION

LAYOUT:

This layout is designed to limit the impulsive purchases of unhealthy

snacks and beverages but not to remove them completely.

The vegetables and healthy foods are placed in close proximity to each
other which incentives the shopper to purchase healthier alternatives.

Furthermore, the snacks chocolates beverages and candy are located

close to each other but also far away from everything else. This allows
people who want to buy them be able to but stops other shop goers by
impulsively purchasing them.
