needs the incoming of a power that can renew him in the love of God. In Me Sam.

7:1 – 14, we capture a picture of the Israelites under Samuel as judge and leader.
Samuel was an upright spiritual leader, determined to bring the people back to
God. Samuel told the people to return to the living god and forsakes all their
strange gods and idols. Many children of God have not forsaken their former
character, but have only hid the traits.
LESSON OUTLINE
A. What Repentance is not
(I) Not just feeling Guilty: acts 24:25.
Feeling guilty about our sin comes before repentances, but it is not
repentance, itself. No one repents, unless they first feel guilty about their sin.
But not all who feel guilty actually repent.
(II) Not just being sorry for your sin: 2 Cor. 7:10
Some people are very sorry because of the consequences of the of their sin,
or because they have been caught. Many people are sorry, not for what they
have done wrong, but for the penalty they receive for being caught.
(III) Not just trying to be a good person. Isa 64:6.
Many people are trying in their own strength to become better persons and
change their ways of life. Any self-effort has a root of self-righteousness in it,
which does not acknowledge the need of repentance from sin.
(IV) Not becoming religious: Matt 3:7-10.
The Pharisees in the bible were extremely religious in behavior and
practice. They fasted and prayed and had many religious ceremonies, yet
they never repented.
(V) Not just knowing the truth: Jam 2:19-20.
Having an intellectual head – knowledge of truth does not necessarily
guarantee that the truth has become a living reality in a man’s life. Believing
with the head and believing with the heart are different.
B. What true repentance is?
(I) Being sorry before God for your sin-Ps 51:1 -4.
True repentance is a sorrow, not just towards one’s self or toward another
person, but first and foremost, it is true sorrow toward God.
(II) Being Truthful About Your Sin – 1 John. 1:9
Do not hide your sins from the savior. Confess it/them to the savior.
(III) Turning away from your sin: Prov. 28:13.
Forsaking ones in brings prosperity our way. If you truly repent from your
sin, you will forsake all your old ways.
(IV) Hating sin: Hebrew. 1:19, Ezekiel 20:43, 44.
True repentance will make sin like the waste product that comes out of
one’s body, for example, urine, feces, sweat, etc. repentances is one of the
hardest commandments for man to obey, because it has to do with human
will. Man is stubborn and it is hard for him to admit his wrongs. But
Repentance become easy as man thinks about his own sin and considers the
goodness and patience of God. Will you repent today?

Introduction

Repentance is the first step we take to receive the salvation that God offers to us in
the lord Jesus Christ. Repentance means turning away from former ways of life to an
entirely new way of life. It is a new life style in which Jesus is both lord and savior.
The word ‘repentance’ in the New Testament comes from Greek. It means ‘to get
new mind’. It implies a change of mind. In the Old Testament, the primary meaning
of the herbed word is to lament or grieve over one’s sin. Man is born in sin; he is, by
nature, a child of wrath; he harbors enmity against God in his heart and he needs a
change of heart. Deliverance from sin is, therefore, inevitable and the sinner needs
the incoming of a power that can renew him in the love of God. In 1 Sam. 7:1-14, we
capture a picture of the Israelites under Samuel as judge and leader. Samuel was an
upright spiritual leader, determined to bring the people back to God. Samuel told the
people to return to the living God and forsake all their strange gods and idols. Many
children of God have forsaken their former character, but have only hid the traits.
