Between the past and the present of aesthetics – critical editions

from the perspective of historical memory and critical reading as
an update of European aesthetics thinking

The Institute of Aesthetics and Arts Culture of the Faculty of Arts, University of Prešov in Prešov
and the Society for Aesthetics in Slovakia invite you to the ninth annual international research
conference COORDINATES OF AESTHETICS, ART AND CULTURE. The convention aspires to
outline, explore, and present the most important aspects and outcomes of aesthetics historiog-
raphy in its historical transformations and deal with them from the current Central European
perspective. The basis for the reconstruction of historical memory is a heuristic approach to
studying primary and secondary sources, their analysis and subsequent confrontation with the
to-date research. Reflection and comparison of historical landmarks and current concepts has the
potential to initiate new methodological procedures, mainly interdisciplinary in nature. With
regard to methodology, it is possible to both reevaluate the usual methods and to generate
a relevant research method for work with primary sources and with theories of recent data; this
can be done based on theories of art(s) history, arts-criticism, or aesthetics derived from the theo-
retical outcomes of contemporary philosophical debate as well as from the practice of practical
aesthetics.
The theme of the conference has two basic lines which can be deemed complementary
from both a diachronic and a synchronic point of view. The first line is the presentation of the
research findings on aesthetics thinking in Central Europe, focusing on the Habsburg monarchy
as one of the cultural-geographic foci of the development of European science, art(s) and culture.
This cultural-geographical context and its historically variable boundaries call for communicating
expertise in European development of aesthetics thinking and its overlapping with local thought
traditions that drew from it. The key term is the critical reading of primary sources as an update of
historical memory, realized through the presentation of the latest results of primary source
research and their interpretation. The expertise related to preparing and running outputs like
annotated critical translations and critical editions is also very important.
The second line is the updating of aesthetics knowledge through the re-evaluation of newer
theoretical concepts arising from the development of philosophical thinking, aesthetics and
reflection on transformations of art(s) styles, forms, and types. The theoretical reflection of art(s),
as an important repository and embodiment of ideas, along with allowing access to scholarly texts
from the past, conveys a view of the studied aesthetics phenomena conditioned by the current
situation of man. The updating of knowledge is represented by the critical reading of newer texts
with the aim of deeper understanding of known material (scholarly texts, literary works, and
literary criticism), analyzing, evaluating, finding essential ideas and further developing them in
the processes of interpretation and search for the meaning. With regard to developmental issues
and the continuity of the development of aesthetics thinking, it is also necessary to examine the
possibilities of re-evaluating the knowledge systems of special aesthetics, with an emphasis on the
aesthetics of music, the aesthetics of theater, the aesthetics of film, the aesthetics of visual arts, the
aesthetics of the media, and the aesthetics of design. We will examine the coordinates of
aesthetics, arts, and culture in two thematic areas.

• Annotated translations of primary sources as a form of updating the knowledge base of
aesthetics.
• Preparation, rules, and methodological issues of critical analysis of primary source editions.

Thematic area B:

Updating aesthetics knowledge – critical reading of 20th-21st-century texts

• Critical reading of 20th-21st-century texts (aesthetics, philosophy, theory of arts and culture).
• Critical reading and interpretation of aesthetics ideas in the 20th and 21st centuries,
as a platform for updating aesthetics knowledge.
• Updating aesthetics and philosophical thinking as a tool for rehabilitation, building, and
maintaining cultural memory.
• Current concepts of applied disciplines (special aesthetics, theoretical reflections of art(s)
practice) and the current state of their research.
