Gas Pump
Final Assign _M1
What is the reason that I
choose this topic?
Because the gas pump is an important item for humans, it is
something that we often encounter in daily life. Most people
around the world fill up with fuel every weekend because
engines need fuel to burn in order to move. And this item was
chosen because it has been rapidly developed from the past
until present. This shows that the development of any item
means it is important.
Pattern "Gas Pump"
History
In the past, hardware stores or general stores would store kerosene in large tanks to be dispensed into containers
brought by customers such as bottles. In 1885, in Fort Wayne Indiana, inventor S.F Bowser created the first kerosene
pump and sold it to grocery stores. This was because filling kerosene at the time required bringing kerosene and a
container to the stove and the kerosene was often contaminated. Bowser wanted to solve this problem by creating a
machine that could dispense kerosene. His gas pump made up of a square metal tank with a wooden cabinet equipped
with a suction pump operated by a manual hand-stroke.
After that, in 1911, the inventors Gilbert & Barker started modifying the shape to include a rubber hose for dispensing oil
and used symbols to indicate the amount of oil to be added to the car.
By 1920, Gilbarco designed a larger fuel tank and, on the top, has a symbol to indicate the place of production from the
company.
In 1930, American Oil designed the fuel tank as a glass cylinder on top to allow customers to see the amount of fuel they
purchased.
Soon after, in 1932, Wayne Co. designed a fuel pump tank by changing the visible pump to a clock meter for easier
reading of the fuel volume that was flowing into the car's tank, and designed the rubber hose to be pressurized for
dispensing the oil.
Until the 1940-1950s, Wayne Co. transformed its measurement system from a clock-based system to a computer-
based system, which could display the amount of fuel purchased and the price.
After 1950s, pump design was improved to allow for dispensing various quantities of fuel from one tank with digital
display of the numbers, allowing customers to choose the desired price for the fuel they want to pump.
