Video A : Introduction to Conversation Introduction to talking about the weather

Hello and welcome to your MES eLesson. I'm Virginia.

Today you’re going to learn the what and the the how of talking about the weather.

Let’s start with “WHAT.”

What are these statements used for?

They are used to make small talk and build positive relationships with other people. Native
speakers often talk about the weather to open conversations. To talk about the weather, you can
say, for example,

“It’s sunny.”
Or
“It’s lovely!”

Good. Now, let’s learn “HOW.” How do you use these statements?

First, it is very important to know how to talk about the weather. Talking about the weather is a
good topic to start with in a conversation because it is never personal and everyone has an
opinion about it. To ask other people’s opinions about the weather, you can ask this common
question,

 “How’s the weather?”

To answer a question about weather, you can say, for example:

“It’s a lovely day!”

“It’s a nasty day!”

We use “it’s” plus an adjective, for example,

“It’s nice!”

Or a noun, for example,

“It’s a nice day!”

To be more specific, you can describe how the weather makes you feel, for example, if it’s
raining:

You could say “It’s rainy today.”

Or you could describe your feelings:

“It’s so gloomy today.”

We use “so,” “really” or “very” to indicate to a great extent or degree, and often native speakers
emphasis the word, for example:

“It’s so cold!”
“It’s really cold!”
“It’s very cold!”

Keep in mind that native speakers talk about the weather in a friendly way – your facial
expression is very important. Watch me – for example,

“It’s a great day.”

“It’s so humid.”
“It’s freezing!”

Let’s try saying those three statements about weather together! Please repeat after me:

“It’s a great day.”

-
-
Great job! Remember to think about your facial expression!

Let’s do another. Please repeat after me:

“It’s so humid.”
-
-
Good! Remember to follow my intonation!

Let’s do one more! Please repeat after me:

“It’s freezing!”
-
-
Excellent!

We’ll practice these examples again in Video B.
