INTRODUCTION

Sri Lanka is an island country located off the southern coast of India. It also
called as Pearl of Indian ocean. Ancient great geographers called it as
Taprobane and Serndib. The beauty of Sri Lanka lies on its blue seas and
golden beaches, its jungle and its mountain peaks. Total area is 65 600 square
kilometers. Population is 22 million. Currency used in Sri Lanka is Sri Lankan
rupees. Capital city of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayawardhanapura Kotte. Colombo is the
main economic capital city.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

Sri Lanka’s documented history goes back 3000 years, with the evidence
of prehistoric human settlements. It was in the 6th century B.C. that the
first Sinhalese came to Sri Lanka, most likely from northern India. The first
Sri Lankan ruler of the Anuradhapura Kingdom, Pandukabhaya.
Buddhism was introduced in the 3rd century B.C. by Arahath Mahinda.
From the 16th century some Costal area of the country were also
controlled by the Portuguese, Darth and British. Independence was
finally granted in 1948.
Sri Lankan culture has long been influenced by the heritage of Theravada
Buddhism passed on from India. Sri Lanka is one of the few countries with a
very fast and rich cultural diversity. Sri Lankan culture includes a lot of
customs and rituals, which were handed down from generation to
generation. The most prominent feature of Sri Lanka is its colorful festivals,
such as Vesak, Deepavali, Thai Pongal, Sinhala and Tamil new year etc. Sri
Lankan culture if often reflected by the use of art, architecture, sculptures
and even foods. Hospitality is also one of the prominent characteristics of
culture.
Sri Lankan landscape presents a rich mosaic of forest, wetlands, agriculture
land and costal and marine Systems. The biodiversity rich ecosystems in the
island such as the lowland, rainforest and coral reefs are confined specially to
specific geographics areas. The country is home tea diverse range of flora and
fauna, including elephants, leopards. And hundreds of species birds. Wildlife
safari, beach activities, and much more, making Sri Lanka as ideal destination
for nature lovers.
Sri Lanka has long been a tourist destination, and is one of most popular travel
destinations in the world. The country has a diverse landscape including
mountains, forests, lakes, and seas with over different types if wildlife making it
an ideal destination for tourists. Some popular attractions include the Sigiriya
rock, Gall Fort, Elephant safari, Moon Plain’s in Nuwaraeliya and tea
Plantations. The climate is tropical which makes the weather warm all year
round. Sri Lanka is a country that everyone should visit least one in their
lifetime.
Sri Lanka as one of world finest island. It is colorful country full of rich history, culture and
natural resources. While it’s small, there is a lot of nature, yesteryear and beauty to see in
Sri Lanka.
