WHAT IS
THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
AND WHY SHOULD I CARE?

This is a question I run into occasionally

because the lymphatic system is not
commonly a topic discussed with your
primary care physician at
appointments.

The lymphatic system is a

complex network of tissues,
vessels, and organs that play a
vital role in maintaining the
body's overall health and
immune function. It works in close
coordination with the circulatory system to transport a fluid
called lymph throughout the body. The lymphatic system is
responsible for filtering out waste products, toxins, and
pathogens, while also helping to regulate fluid balance.
Understanding the basics of the lymphatic system is
essential for comprehending its functions and appreciating
its significance in our overall well-being.

ORGANS AND PARTS OF THE

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM:
The lymphatic system consists of several key components
that work together to facilitate its functions. These include:

LYMPHATIC VESSELS
These thin-walled vessels form an extensive
network throughout the body and are
responsible for transporting lymph fluid.
Lymphatic capillaries collect excess interstitial
fluid, which is then processed and filtered by
the lymph nodes.

LYMPH NODES
Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped
structures located at various points along the
lymphatic vessels. They act as filtering stations,
removing debris, foreign particles, and
pathogens from the lymph fluid. Lymph nodes
also contain immune cells that help to initiate
an immune response when necessary.

SPLEEN
The spleen is the largest lymphatic organ in the
body and is located in the upper left abdomen.
It acts as a filter for blood, removing old or
damaged red blood cells and pathogens. The
spleen also plays a role in immune response
and stores a reserve of blood cells.

THYMUS
The thymus is a gland located in the upper
chest behind the sternum. It is crucial for the
development and maturation of T lymphocytes,
a type of white blood cell that plays a significant
role in immune defense.

TONSILS & ADENOIDS

Tonsils are located at the back of the throat,
while adenoids are situated at the back of the
nasal cavity. Both tonsils and adenoids help to
trap and remove pathogens entering the body
through the nose and mouth.

THE ROLE OF THE
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
IN THE BODY

The lymphatic system, often overshadowed

by its counterpart, the circulatory system, is a complex and
remarkable network that performs essential functions in the
human body. While it may not receive as much attention,
the lymphatic system plays a vital role in maintaining
overall health and well-being. Here are some surprising
facts about the lymphatic system and its remarkable
functions:

The lymphatic system spans throughout the entire body,

comprising a vast network of lymphatic vessels, lymph
nodes, and lymphoid organs. It is estimated that there are
over 600 to 700 lymph nodes in the human body, acting as
checkpoints for filtering and monitoring the lymphatic fluid.

One of the primary functions of the lymphatic system is

waste management. It collects and transports excess fluid,
waste products, cellular debris, and toxins from the tissues
back into the bloodstream for elimination. This crucial role
helps maintain a healthy fluid balance and prevents the
buildup of harmful substances in the body.

The lymphatic system is intimately connected with the

immune system. Lymph nodes, present at various points
along the lymphatic vessels, serve as hubs for immune cell
interaction, helping to detect and fight off infections,
pathogens, and foreign substances. They act as a vital line
of defense, safeguarding the body against illness and
disease.

The fluid that circulates within the lymphatic system is
known as lymph. Interestingly, lymph is similar to blood
plasma but lacks red blood cells. It contains white blood
cells, proteins, fats, and other substances necessary for
immune function and tissue nourishment.

But unlike the blood that has the heart for a pump,
lymphatic fluid is propelled by rhythmic contractions of
muscles, movement, and breathing throughout the body.

Physical activity and exercise play a crucial role in

maintaining proper lymphatic flow.

The lymphatic system can be involved in the spread of

cancer cells. Certain cancers can metastasize, meaning
cancer cells can break away from the primary tumor and
enter the lymphatic vessels. From there, they can travel to
nearby lymph nodes or other parts of the body, making the
lymphatic system a critical aspect of cancer staging and
treatment.

Understanding these surprising facts about the lymphatic

system highlights its significance in maintaining a healthy
body. From waste management and immune support to its
role in cancer progression, the lymphatic system plays a
multifaceted and indispensable role in overall health and
well-being.

To recap, the lymphatic system serves several essential

functions in the body, including the following:

Immune response: One of the primary functions of the

lymphatic system is to support the body's immune
response. Lymph nodes contain immune cells, such as
lymphocytes and macrophages, which help identify
and neutralize foreign substances, pathogens, and
cancer cells.¹

Fluid balance: The lymphatic system maintains fluid
balance by collecting excess interstitial fluid from
tissues and returning it to the bloodstream. This
prevents the buildup of fluid and swelling in the body.² ³

Absorption of dietary fats: The lymphatic system plays

a crucial role in absorbing dietary fats and fat-soluble
vitamins from the digestive system. Lymphatic vessels
called lacteals transport these substances, forming a
milky white fluid called chyle.⁴

Waste removal: The lymphatic system helps remove

waste products, cellular debris, and toxins from tissues,
and the same process is true of the glymphatic system
for the brain. This process helps maintain tissue health
and supports overall detoxification.⁵

The lymphatic system is like a
highway of health, helping to clear
away waste, toxins, and
inflammation from the body. It is a
vital system that deserves
attention and support for overall
wellness.
IDENTIFYING
STAGNANT LYMPH
AND RELATED SYMPTOMS
KEY INDICATORS OF
LYMPHATIC DYSFUNCTION

As we’ve discussed, the lymphatic system plays a crucial

role in maintaining overall health by removing waste, toxins,
and pathogens from the body. However, when the flow of
lymphatic fluid becomes impaired, it can lead to stagnant
lymph, which can negatively impact various aspects of our
well-being.

Recognizing the symptoms of stagnant lymph is essential

for early intervention and implementing strategies to
support lymphatic flow. This section will explore the concept
of stagnant lymph, common symptoms associated with it,
and methods to identify if you have stagnant lymph.

I want to empower you to take charge of your own health

and to recognize when it could be an issue you can address
to elevate your healing.

UNDERSTANDING STAGNANT LYMPH

AND ITS IMPACT ON HEALTH:

Stagnant lymph refers to a disruption or slowdown in the

normal flow of lymphatic fluid within the lymphatic system.
When the lymphatic flow becomes sluggish or obstructed, it
can lead to a buildup of toxins, waste products, and cellular
debris, hampering the system's ability to effectively cleanse
and protect the body. Over time, this can have a negative
impact on various bodily functions, immune response, and
overall health.

COMMON SYMPTOMS OF STAGNANT LYMPH:
Persistent Swelling: Edema or persistent swelling,
especially in the extremities such as the legs, ankles, or
hands, is a common symptom of stagnant lymph. It
occurs when excess fluid accumulates due to
compromised lymphatic drainage.

Fatigue and Low Energy Levels: Stagnant lymph can

contribute to feelings of fatigue and low energy levels.
When the lymphatic system is unable to effectively
remove metabolic waste, toxins, and byproducts, it can
impact cellular function and energy production.

Recurrent Infections: Stagnant lymph can impair the

immune system's ability to defend against pathogens,
increasing the susceptibility to infections such as colds,
sinusitis, urinary tract infections, or skin infections.

Brain Fog and Cognitive Issues: Poor lymphatic

drainage can impact brain health, leading to cognitive
symptoms like brain fog, difficulty concentrating,
memory problems, and a general sense of mental
sluggishness.
Digestive Issues: Stagnant lymph can affect digestive
function, resulting in symptoms such as bloating,
constipation, poor nutrient absorption, and a
compromised gut microbiome. The lymphatic system
supports the transportation of nutrients and waste
removal in the gastrointestinal tract.

METHODS TO IDENTIFY STAGNANT LYMPH:

Physical Observation: A visual assessment of your body
may reveal signs of stagnant lymph, such as persistent
swelling, particularly in the limbs or areas prone to fluid
retention. Be sure to look in the mirror to check if you
have armpits or “arm puffs”. If your armpits are not
concave, but are puffing out, that is a sign that you may
have stagnant lymph fluid in your body.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage Assessment: Manual
lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage
technique that stimulates lymphatic flow. An
experienced therapist can assess the quality of
lymphatic drainage through gentle palpation and
evaluate areas of congestion or blockage.

Lymphoscintigraphy: Lymphoscintigraphy is a
diagnostic imaging technique that involves injecting a
small amount of radioactive material into the
lymphatic system. It provides a detailed visualization of
lymphatic flow, identifying any areas of blockage or
dysfunction.

Self-Assessment of Symptoms: Paying attention to your

body and observing the presence of common
symptoms associated with stagnant lymph can
provide valuable insights. Keeping a symptom diary
can help track patterns and determine the severity and
frequency of symptoms.

IMPORTANCE OF MOVEMENT
FOR LYMPHATIC HEALTH
The lymphatic system plays a vital role in maintaining
overall health by eliminating waste, toxins, and pathogens
from the body. The lymphatic system relies on movement
and muscle contractions to propel lymphatic fluid
throughout the body. In this section, we highlight the
significance of incorporating specific movements and
exercises into your daily routine to stimulate lymphatic
circulation. By embracing these activities, you can support
optimal lymphatic flow and prevent stagnation. Here are
some ways you can move to support your lymph (and if you
know my background, you know I’m a huge proponent of
yoga!)

walking: Walking is a simple yet effective

exercise for promoting lymphatic
circulation. It engages the calf muscles,
which act as pumps, propelling lymph
fluid upward. Aim for a brisk walk of 30
minutes to an hour daily. Swing your arms,
maintain an upright posture, and engage
in deep breathing to maximize the
lymphatic benefits.

Rebounding: on a mini trampoline

or rebounder is a fun and efficient
way to stimulate lymphatic flow.
The up-and-down motion
engages the entire body,
activating the lymphatic vessels
and promoting lymphatic
drainage. Start with gentle
bounces and gradually increase
intensity. Aim for 15-20 minutes of
rebounding exercises, gradually
building up your stamina.

Yoga: Yoga combines movement, stretching, and deep
breathing, making it an excellent practice for lymphatic
health. Specific yoga poses, such as inversions (e.g.,
downward-facing dog, legs-up-the-wall pose) and twists
(e.g., spinal twist), encourage lymphatic drainage.
Incorporate yoga into your routine and explore classes that
focus on poses specifically beneficial for the lymphatic
system.

Jumping Jacks: Jumping jacks are a simple and effective

cardiovascular exercise that stimulates lymphatic flow. The
jumping motion and rhythmic movement of the arms help
increase circulation throughout the body. Start with a few sets
of 10-15 jumping jacks, gradually increasing the repetitions as
you build endurance.

Arm Swings: Arm swings are a dynamic movement that

engages the upper body, promoting lymphatic flow in the
arms and chest area. Stand with your feet shoulder-width
apart, and swing your arms
forward and backward in a
synchronized manner. Aim for 20-
30 arm swings, gradually
increasing the range of motion
and speed.

Pilates: Pilates exercises, with their

emphasis on core strength,
controlled movements, and proper
alignment, can contribute to
healthy lymphatic flow.
Incorporate exercises such as leg
circles, the hundred, and
swimming into your Pilates routine.
These movements activate the
lower body, stimulate deep
breathing, and enhance
lymphatic circulation.

Swimming: Swimming is a low-impact, full-body exercise
that can support lymphatic flow. The buoyancy of water
reduces stress on joints while engaging multiple muscle
groups. Aim for regular swimming sessions, incorporating
different strokes to engage various muscle groups and
encourage lymphatic circulation.

Breathing Exercises: In addition to specific movements,

incorporating deep breathing exercises into your daily
routine can enhance lymphatic health. Deep breathing
promotes diaphragmatic movement, which assists in
lymphatic drainage. Practice abdominal breathing, also
known as diaphragmatic breathing, by inhaling deeply
through your nose, allowing your abdomen to expand, and
exhaling fully through your mouth. Perform several cycles of
deep breathing throughout the day to support lymphatic
flow.
