potential to do so. Examples of Non-Permit confined spaces:
equipment closets, crawl spaces under houses, machinery
cabinets, ventilated tunnels, and drop ceilings.

REAL LIFE SCENARIOS
OF WORKING IN
CONFINED SPACES
In 2011, two brothers, aged 16 and 22, died due to the hazardous
environment in an organic waste recycling facility. While they
ASPHYXIATION IN were flushing out the drainage system with a high-pressure hose,
THE the younger brother was asphyxiated by hydrogen sulfide, which
caused him to fall to the bottom of a 10-foot shaft. His older
UNDERGROUND brother attempted to rescue his brother but sadly met the same
DRAINAGE SYSTEM fate and died 2 days later in hospital.
In 1999, an electrician was knocked unconscious from the fumes
within a waste gas tower. Dangerous amounts of carbon
monoxide, dihydrogen sulfide, hydrogen cyanide, and other toxic
gases were present. Luckily, a student was accompanying him
ELECTRICIAN that day. They were both inside the skirt underneath the gas
RENDERED tower, on their hands and knees working on a motor. The
electrician suddenly became motionless and unresponsive –
UNCONSCIOUS IN A knocked unconscious by the gases. Although the student felt ill
GAS TOWER due to the fumes, he managed to pull the electrician to safety.
Both were very fortunate to survive this extremely hazardous
atmosphere.
APPLICATION OF CONFINED
SPACE ENTRY
Confined space entry is meant to protect AVS
personnel from harm, disease, or even death
while carrying out their job-related
responsibilities by promoting safety awareness,
precautions, and rules. In order to reduce the
risk of further physical harm and to maintain a
safe work environment, this also applies to all
AVS employees who work at locationswhere
other industries or aircraft accidentshave
occurred.
