- Listen to others, even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Speak up with courage and open your mind when listen. Give respect to others for them to return it to
us also. It points out that even people who seem dull or ignorant have their own hidden stories, and we
should listen to them because they will also listen to us when it is our time to give insights from every
conversation.

- If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter.

Be content with who you are. The poet advises us not to judge our worth by comparing ourselves to
everyone else. If you see yourself as better, misplaced pride will make you arrogant. Bottom line, stay
true to yourself. You must be your own biggest critic and your own biggest fan.

- Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Be satisfied with your achievements and not to make an effort to do anything else. Give yourself credit
and cherish the profits or gains achieved as a result of hard work will always be worth it. don’t just rest
on past achievements but crave for more greater things and plans.

- Many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

There is always another side to this tricky place of world. If there are angels, expect that demons are
walking alongside them. There are people with morals and values – those who ‘strive for high ideals’.
Don’t ignore the people who have got your back – who are there to support you.

- Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Each of the years we live makes us wiser through all we live through. It means we learn to all the years
in our own individual experiences as well as the experience and wisdom of the elders. The poet here
urges us to give up those emotions of the youth and be guided by the wisdom that mankind has
gathered over the ages. Use of the words ‘kindly’ and ‘gracefully’ reminds us to stay humble to life’s
lessons without losing our dignity.

- Do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Our worst enemy sometimes is our minds. The poet speaks of ‘dark imaginings’ or negative thoughts
that could come from unnecessary worrying, distrust or anger. It means knowingly steer away from
depressing situations and rein our minds in.

- With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Bad things happen because life is not always filled with rainbows. Otherwise, no one can pretend
because some parts of life are also a reality that need to be acknowledged. It means don’t be blind by
the bad things. The world is truly a beautiful place, if you will allow yourself to see it.
I personally believe this 8-stanza poem is the best eye-opener for everyone to see life in its brightest
side. Each stanza is overflowing with hope, motivation and lessons. Each gives us pieces of advice to live
in peace and in harmony. This poem impacted my life so much and I want to share the great lessons that
we can learn from the poem.

It is an English poem, though its title is in Latin which literally means "desired things." This poem has all
the necessary factors to have a more joyful life. The poem is trying to teach how true happiness can be
achieved in life. Ehrmann describes how we must behave to become a better person and experience a
life full of happiness. “Desiderata” is a poem that encourages us to live a peaceful life. Reading the poem
makes us realize that anyone can feel happiness and live life to the fullest. The poem “Desiderata” tells
us to avoid associating ourselves with negativity. The poem tells us that we cannot achieve true
happiness if we compare ourselves to our neighbors, nor can we live life to the fullest if we are an
ignorant person. If become ego-centric or ignorant we will not listen to the ideas of other people, we
will miss out on their ideas, and we will remain blind to the truth of things. As the poem says, we should
“listen to others”

about listening to others, but being compassionate, overcoming insecurities, being passionate in career,
being genuine, learning as we grow, keeping a peaceful heart, and realizing life is always wonderful.
