Growing in the contemporary world can be quite scary especially the transitioning

from being a teenager to an adult. The narrator in the “The Negative Voices in Your Teenager’s

Head” is the voice of a teenager who is trying to cope with his or her daily life. Being a teenager

is coupled with social anxiety that eventually results in some form of depression due to over

thinking. From an in-depth examination of the teenager’s self-talk, he or she is likely to be

experiencing anxiety, and to some extent, mild depression which all indicates the teenager is not

mental state and well-being is not okay.

The current educational structure in learning institutions appears naïve regarding

this mental issues a normal teenager is likely to experience in his or her life. The voice of the

teenager outlines that “Sometimes my feelings get hurt at school by teachers, deans, counselors,

but mostly by other students.” This clearly shows how teenager challenged with mental problems

however small they are not keenly supported. A school counselor in an educational institution is

often charged with the responsibility of affording assistance to such teenagers who experience

anxiety and depression. However, according to the teenager the school counselor also partakes in

mocking the teenager who according to his or her thoughts seems to be distressing.

The pattern of thoughts the teenager is having are parallel with thoughts

experienced by a suicidal individual. The teenager managers these negative thoughts through

hide his or her room and watching television or videos. The teenager gives the impression of

distrust towards the support he or she has and feels like he or she has the solution to the negative

thoughts he or she cannot stand. The teenager contemplates that having space, a calm approach

of communication, electronics, a quiet area, someone to talk to and love him or her will likely

assist in redeeming him or her from the negative thoughts that are distressing him or her and

making life difficult.

It vital to underline the apparent awareness of the teenager as he or she experiences

the negative thoughts. The teenager is cognizant and resourceful in comprehending the ways he

or she is likely to evade the negative thoughts. However, some of the ways the teenager believes

he or she will be okay and stop having are not quite right. For instance, distracting thoughts

through social media, hiding and watching movies are not likely to remedy the negative thoughts

but increase such thoughts. The teenager needs appropriate professional support from a

psychologist as well as social support from friends and family.

Anxiety and depression are frequent among teenagers and young adults as they start

to comprehend the difficulties and challenges of the world. During such a stage the teenager

pursuits to discover him or herself and the purpose he or she has in life. This period of discovery

is often coupled with forms of anxiety and depression due to the uncertainty. A specialist on

mental matters, family and friends altogether need to assist a teenager during such a period to

prevent him or her from falling into rumination and negative thoughts. The teenager needs to

allowed to personally comprehend that life is coupled with challenges but the challenges are

necessary to shift or develop him or her to manage themselves as adults. Educational institutions

must also incorporate subject matter on social anxiety and take cases of a student experiencing

anxiety or depression seriously to prevent proliferated mental problems that may push a teenager

to injure themselves or even commit suicide.
