AUTOPILOT CONTROLLER - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES


1. General
A. Maintenance practices for the autopilot controller are provided in this section. For detailed maintenance information, refer
to Sperry Autopilot Controller Component Maintenance Manual.
2. Description
A. The autopilot controller provides the pilot with the ability to manually introduce turn and pitch commands to the autopilot
computer and to select the operational modes of the automatic flight control system through the autopilot computer.
(1) The autopilot controller is a pedestal mounted unit containing a pitch wheel and generator assembly, a detented turn
knob and variable resistor assembly, three momentary-action, annunciation, pushbutton switches, one annunciating
indicator and one single pole normally open push button test switch. All items are identified by the nomenclature on an
edge lighted panel. The trim indicator is used only as an annunciator.
B. For descriptive information on autopilot modes, refer to the Sperry SPZ-650 Flight Guidance System Maintenance
Manual.
3. Autopilot Controller Removal/Installation
A. Remove Autopilot Controller (Refer to 22- 10-00, Figure 2).
(1) Disengage FD 1 115 VAC, FD 2 115 VAC, A/P 1 28 VDC, AP 1 115 VAC circuit breakers.
(2) Loosen deus fasteners and pull controller out of panel.
(3) Disconnect electrical connection.
B. Install Autopilot Controller (Refer to 22- 10-00, Figure 2).
(1) Connect electrical connector, and slide controller into panel.
(2) Tighten deus fasteners to secure the controller.
(3) Engage FD 1 115 VAC, FD 2 115 VAC, A/P 1 28 VDC, AP 1 115 VAC circuit breakers.
(4) Operational test autopilot. Refer to Autopilot - Adjustment/Test.
