ANGLE-OF-ATTACK SYSTEM - ADJUSTMENT/TEST


1. General
A. This section outlines the tests to make sure that the angle-of-attack and stall warning systems operate properly.
2. Tools and Equipment
A. Refer to Navigation - General, for tools and equipment.
3. System Resistance Checks
A. Preliminary.
(1) Make sure that LH AOA ANTI-ICE, RH AOA ANTI-ICE, FLP/SPLR IND and AOA circuit breakers are disengaged.
(2) Remove the upholstery panel to gain access to the angle-of-attack computer in the copilot's side console.
(3) Disconnect electrical connector PF143 from angle-of-attack computer.
B. Look for these resistances between the pins of PF143 as indicated:

Engage AOA circuit breaker and set Battery Switch on for the these checks:
P R Less than 0.2 when AOA test position is selected on rotary test switch and left or
right squat switch is in ground position.
R GND Less than 0.5 when left or right squat switch is in ground position.
R GND Open when left and right squat switch are in air position.
4. Preliminary Test Setup
A. All tests must be completed with an external electrical power source regulated to 28.5 VDC, +0.5 or -0.5 VDC.
B. Connect the airplane to an external source of hydraulic power.
WARNING: Electrical adjustments to the speed brake position transmitter may trigger spoiler hold-down mode if
the spoiler hyd circuit breaker is not disengaged before you make electrical adjustments.
C. Set the flaps to 20 or FULL position for ease of access to right hand speed brake position sensor.
D. Make sure that the FLP/SPLR IND and AOA circuit breakers are engaged, SPOILER HYD is disengaged.
5. Speed Brake Position Transmitter Adjustment/Test
NOTE: Left transmitter feeds speed brake position indicator and flaps, altitude and speed brake monitor
system. Right transmitter powers angle-of-attack computer. Both outputs are fed to the optional speed
brake asymmetry detection system, if installed.
A. Adjust Speed Brake Position Indicating System (Airplanes prior to -7107).
(1) Install an inclinometer on number 2 and 7 speed brake panels.
NOTE: Hydraulically retract the speed brakes before you set the inclinometer at 0 degrees.
(2) Monitor the voltage at pins B (+) and C (-) of the left speed brake position transmitter or B (+) and A (-) of the right
speed brake position monitor. An alternate location for voltage monitoring is on the printed circuit board (PCB 8),

installed in the pilot's side console, pins 13 (+) and 12 (-) (left position transmitter) or pins 36 (+) and 37 (-) (right
position transmitter).
(3) Install breakout box at either speed brake position transmitter or PCB 8. Refer to Figure 501.
(4) Use the speed brake control lever to raise the spoilers to maximum angle.
(5) Record the angle to which speed brake panel numbers 2 and 7 have hydraulically raised.
(6) Hydraulically return the speed brakes to 0 degrees.
(7) Loosen the setscrews in the speed brake position transmitter arm of speed brake panel number 2.
(8) Adjust the transmitter shaft for an output voltage of 4.0 VDC, +0.5 or -0.5 VDC.
(9) Tighten setscrews and record voltage.
(10) Raise speed brake panel number 2 to the angle recorded in step (4).
NOTE: Make sure that voltage output of potentiometer increases when speed brake panel is raised. If
voltage decreased, potentiometer is wired backwards.
(11) Record voltage output of speed brake position transmitter.
(12) Lower speed brakes to 0 degrees.
(13) Loosen the setscrews in the speed brake position transmitter arms of speed brake panel number 7.
(14) Adjust the transmitter shaft for an output voltage of 4.0 VDC, +0.5 or - 0.5 VDC.
(15) Tighten setscrews and record voltage.
NOTE: Make sure that voltage output of potentiometer increases when speed brake panel is raised. If
voltage decreased, potentiometer is wired backwards.
(16) Raise speed brake panel number 7 to angle recorded in step (4).
(17) Record voltage output of spoiler position transmitter.
(18) Cycle the speed brakes hydraulically three times, while you monitor the voltage outputs at maximum extension and 0
degrees for each cycle.
(a) Voltages at the respective positions must be within +0.040 VDC, or -0.040 VDC, of voltages recorded in steps
(9), (11), (15) and (17).
B. Adjust Speed Brake Position Indicating System (Airplanes -7107 and On and -0001 thru -7106 that incorporate SB650-
27-48).
(1) Disengage the FLP/SPLR IND circuit breaker.
(2) Open pilot's side console access panel.
(3) Connect breakout box between JF21H and PF21H.
(4) Engage FLP/SPLR IND circuit breaker.
(5) Make sure that all four speed brake panels are in the stowed position.
(6) Insert jumper between pin 14 and pin 2 for at least one second.
(7) Remove jumper from breakout box.
C. Angle-of-Attack/Speed Brake Interface Printed Circuit Board Adjustment (Airplanes -0001 thru -0241 and -7001 thru -
7106).
(1) If necessary, do the Preliminary Test Setup.
(2) If necessary, do the Speed Brake Position Transmit Adjustment/Test.
(3) Get access to the printed circuit board (PCB 8) on pilot’s side console. Refer to Printed Circuit Boards And Relays -
Maintenance Practices.
CAUTION: Make sure that the DC POWER switch is in the OFF position when you remove or install the
printed circuit board. This will prevent electrical damage to the printed circuit board.
(4) Set the DC POWER switch to the OFF position.
(5) Remove the printed circuit board.
(6) Install the printed circuit breakout box.
(7) Set the DC POWER switch to the BATT position.

(8) Do the speed brake interface (PCB-8) test.


(a) Monitor the voltage at pins 18 (+) and 19 (-).
(b) Retract the speed brakes.
1 Make sure all the speed brake panels are fully retracted.
2 Record the voltage.
3 Make sure the voltage is 2.0 volts +0.5 or -0.5 volts.
4 If the voltage is not in the satisfactory tolerance, refer to the Wiring Diagram Manual, Chapter 91, Printed
Circuit Board Number 8 For Angle-of-Attack, And Air Speed Interface Adjustment/Test.
(c) Extend the speed brakes.
1 Make sure all the speed brake panels are fully extended.
2 Record the voltage.
3 Make sure the voltage is 10.0 volts +0.5 or -0.5 volts.
4 If the voltage is not in the satisfactory tolerance, refer to the Wiring Diagram Manual, Chapter 91, Printed
Circuit Board Number 8 For Angle-of-Attack, And Air Speed Interface Adjustment/Test.
(d) Retract the speed brakes.
1 Make sure all the speed brake panels are fully retracted.
2 Adjust R33 in no more than one-half turn increments to the direction of 2.0 volts, or 0 percent, as shown on
the speed brake position indicator.
3 Continue to adjust R33 in no more than one-half turn increments until 0 percent is shown on the speed
brake position indicator.
4 Record the voltage with the speed brakes retracted.
5 Make sure the voltage is approximately 2.0 volts at 0 percent.
(e) Extend the speed brakes.
1 Make sure all the speed brake panels are fully extended.
2 Adjust R39 in no more than one half turn increments to the direction of 10.0 volts, or 100 percent, as shown
on the speed brake position indicator.
3 Continue to adjust R39 in no more than one half turn increments until 100 percent is shown on the speed
brake position indicator.
4 Record the voltage with the speed brakes extended.
5 Make sure the voltage is approximately 10.0 volts at 100 percent.
(9) Do the AOA interface (PCB-8) test.
(a) Monitor the voltages at pins 24 (+) and 23 (-).
(b) Retract the speed brakes.
1 Make sure all the speed brake panels are fully retracted.
2 Record the voltage.
3 Make sure the voltage is 2.0 volts +0.5 or -0.5 volts.
4 If the voltage is not in the satisfactory tolerance, refer to the Wiring Diagram Manual, Chapter 91, Printed
Circuit Board Number 8 For Angle-of-Attack, And Air Speed Interface Adjustment/Test.
(c) Extend the speed brakes.
1 Make sure all the speed brake panels are fully extended.
2 Record the voltage.
3 Make sure the voltage is 10.0 volts +0.5 or -0.5 volts.
4 If the voltage is not in the satisfactory tolerance, refer to the Wiring Diagram Manual, Chapter 91, Printed
Circuit Board Number 8 For Angle-of-Attack, And Air Speed Interface Adjustment/Test.
(d) Retract the speed brakes.
1 Make sure all the speed brake panels are fully retracted.

2 Adjust R53 in no more than one-half turn increments to the direction of 2.0 volts, or 0 percent, as shown on
the speed brake position indicator.
3 Continue to adjust R53 in no more than one-half turn increments until 0 percent is shown on the speed
brake position indicator.
4 Record the voltage with the speed brakes retracted.
5 Make sure the voltage is approximately 2.0 volts at 0 percent.
(e) Extend the speed brakes.
1 Make sure all the speed brake panels are fully extended.
2 Adjust R59 in no more than one half turn increments to the direction of 10.0 volts, or 100 percent, as shown
on the speed brake position indicator.
3 Continue to adjust R59 in no more than one half turn increments until 100 percent is shown on the speed
brake position indicator.
4 Record the voltage with the speed brakes extended.
5 Make sure the voltage is approximately 10.0 volts at 100 percent.
CAUTION: Make sure that the DC POWER switch is in the OFF position when you remove or install the
printed circuit board. This will prevent electrical damage to the printed circuit board.
(f) Set the DC POWER switch to the OFF position.
(g) Remove the printed circuit board breakout box.
(h) Reinstall the printed circuit board. Refer to Printed Circuit Boards And Relays - Maintenance Practices.
(i) Do the System Voltage Checks.
D. Angle-of-Attack/Speed Brake Interface Printed Circuit Board (PCB) Adjustment (Airplanes -7107 and On and -0001 thru -
7106 that incorporate SB650-27-48).
(1) Connect breakout box at PF143, Stall Warn/AOA Computer Disconnect.
(2) Monitor voltage of JF21H, pin 18 (+) and 19 (-).
(a) Set speed brake control to zero. Make sure that the speed brake indicator reads 0 degrees and record the
voltage (approximately 2 volts).
(b) Set the speed control to 50 degrees. Make sure that the speed brake indicator reads 100 percent and record
the voltage (approximately 10 volts).
(3) Monitor voltage of JF21H, pin 24 (+) and pin 23 (-).
(a) Set speed brake control to zero and record voltage (approximately 2 volts).
(b) Set speed brake control to 50 degrees and record voltage (approximately 10 volts).
E. System Voltage Checks.
(1) Make sure that the DAY/NITE DIM switch is set to OFF and WARN LTS 1, WARN LTS 2, AOA, and FLP/SPLR IND
circuit breakers are engaged.
(2) Make sure that flap system is properly electrically rigged.
(3) With battery switch OFF, disconnect PF143 from the angle-of-attack computer, then set battery switch to BATT.
(4) Make sure that the voltages that follow are between the pins of PF143.

(5) Hydraulically set speed brakes to 0 PERCENT. (Flap position is optional).
(a) Make sure that voltage measured between pins G (+) and H (-) is 2.0 VDC, +0.2 or -0.2 VDC.
(b) Make sure that voltage measured between pins H (+) and a (-) is 2.0 VDC, +0.5 or -0.5 VDC.

(6) Hydraulically set speed brakes to 100 percent (Flap position is optional).
(a) Make sure that voltage measured between pins G (+) and H (-) is 10.0 VDC, +0.2 or - 0.2 VDC.
(b) Make sure that voltage measured between pins H (+) and a (-) is 2.0 VDC, +0.5 or -0.5 VDC.
(7) Set flaps to UP (speed brake position is optional).
(a) Make sure that voltage measured between pins K (+) and M (-) is 2.0 VDC, +0.2 or -0.2 VDC.
(b) Make sure that voltage measured between pins g (+) and f (-) is 2.0 VDC, +0.2 or -0.2 VDC.
(8) Set flaps to FULL (speed brake position is optional).
(a) Make sure that voltage measured between pins K (+) and M (-) is 10.0 VDC, +0.2 or -0.2 VDC.
(b) Make sure that voltage measured between pins g (+) and f (-) is 10.0 VDC, +0.2 or -0.2 VDC.
(9) Set battery switch to OFF.
(10) Connect PF143 to angle-of-attack computer.
6. Angle-of-Attack/Stall Warning System Test
NOTE: The Angle-of-Attack/Stall Warning System Test, which is required by Chapter 5 Time Limit/Maintenance
Checks, consists of A. Angle-of-Attack Indicator Check, B. Functional Test Angle-of-Attack/Stall
Warning System, C. Angle-of-Attack Self Test, and D. Angle-of-Attack Probe Annunciator Operational
Test.
NOTE: If any of the specifications defined in these tests are not met, then adjust the speed brake position
indicating system and complete an angle-of-attack/speed brake interface printed circuit board
adjustment as defined in the Speed Brake Position Transmitter Adjustment/Test.
A. Angle-of-Attack Indicator Check
(1) Connect an external source of 28.5 VDC to the airplane.
(2) Disengage LH AOA ANTI-ICE and RH AOA ANTI-ICE circuit breakers.
(3) Set the flaps to UP (0 degree) position.
(4) Set the speed brakes to retracted (0 degree) position.
(5) Rotate the left angle-of-attack probe to the full clockwise position and attach.
(6) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe until the ANGLE-OF-ATTACK indicator pointer reads 0.20, +0.01 or -0.01.
(7) Cycle the flaps and speed brakes in accordance with Table 501 and make sure that the ANGLE-OF-ATTACK
indicator pointer indications are within a tolerance of +0.05, or -0.05 of the values shown.

(8) Set flaps and speed brakes to 0 degree position.
(9) Rotate and hold the right angle-of-attack probe until the ADI FAST/SLOW pointer is centered.
(a) Make sure that the angle-of-attack indexer green lamp is illuminated.
(10) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe until the ADI FAST/SLOW pointer indicates FAST.
(a) Make sure that the angle-of-attack indexer yellow lamp is illuminated.
NOTE: As probe is rotated from centered to fast, lamps will cycle from green, and then to green
and yellow, and then to yellow.
(11) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe until the ADI FAST/SLOW pointer indicates SLOW.
(12) Make sure that angle-of-attack indexer red lamp is illuminated.
(a) As probe is rotated from fast to slow, indexer lamps will cycle as follows:
1 yellow.
2 yellow and green.

(13) Remove the tape that attaches the left probe and tape the right probe in full counterclockwise position.
(14) Rotate and hold the left angle-of-attack probe until the ADI FAST/SLOW pointer is centered.
(a) Make sure that the angle-of-attack indexes green lamp is illuminated.
(15) Rotate the left angle-of-attack probe until the ADI FAST/SLOW pointer indicates FAST.
(a) Make sure that the angle-of-attack indexer yellow lamp is illuminated.
NOTE: As probe is rotated from centered to fast, lamps will cycle from green and then to green
and yellow and then to yellow.
(16) Rotate the left angle-of- attack probe until the ADI FAST/SLOW pointer indicates SLOW.
(17) Make sure that angle-of-attack indexer red lamp is illuminated.
B. Functional Test Angle-of-Attack/Stall Warning System.
NOTE: All references to ADI are applicable to electromechanical as well as electronic ADI.
CAUTION: Do not operate aoa probes on ground for more than 30 seconds. Excessive ground operation can
cause probe to prematurely burn out.
(1) Connect an external source of 28.5 VDC to the airplane and set battery and AVIONICS power ON.
(2) Disengage LH AOA ANTI-ICE and RH AOA ANTI-ICE circuit breakers.
(3) Make sure that the PITOT/STATIC ANTI-ICE switches are in OFF position, flaps are UP and spoilers are at 0
degrees.
(4) Disengage the AOA circuit breaker and make sure that:
(a) The angle-of- attack indicator OFF flag appears.
(b) The ADI SPD flag appears.
(c) The STALL WARN annunciator lamp on annunciator panel illuminates.
(5) Engage AOA circuit breaker and make sure that:
(a) The angle-of-attack indicator OFF flag disappears.
(b) The ADI SPD flag disappears.
(c) The STALL WARN annunciator lamp extinguishes.
(6) Rotate the left angle-of-attack transmitter probe fully clockwise and the right angle-of-attack transmitter probe fully
counterclockwise.
(a) Make sure that the angle-of-attack indicator pointer is at the zero end of the scale.
NOTE: Tape or otherwise attach the transmitter probes in position until the subsequent step
indicates other movement.
(7) Rotate the left angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full counterclockwise position.
(a) Make sure that angle-of-attack indicator pointer moves from 0 to 1.0.
(8) Rotate the left angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full clockwise position.
(a) Make sure that angle-of-attack indicator pointer moves from 1.0 to 0.
(9) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full clockwise position.
(a) Make sure that angle-of-attack indicator pointer moves from 0 to 1.0.
(10) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full counterclockwise position.
(a) Make sure that angle-of-attack indicator pointer moves from 1.0 to 0.
(11) Activate the left and right main gear squat switches to AIR position.
(12) Rotate the left angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full counterclockwise position.
(a) Observe the angle-of-attack indicator scale and make sure that both stick shakers are activated when pointer is
between 0.75 and 0.79.

(13) Rotate the left angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full clockwise position and make sure that both stick shakers are
deactivated.
(14) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full clockwise position.
(a) Observe the angle-of-attack indicator scale and make sure that both stick shakers are activated when pointer is
between 0.75 and 0.79.
(15) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe to the full counterclockwise position and make sure that both stick shakers are
deactivated.
NOTE: When you complete these test procedures, if the airplane has a Teledyne Computer Part
Number: SLZ9986 or SLZ7668, the pointer will stay between 0.75 and 0.79, steps (16) through
(25), which apply only to 7-degree and 20-degree flap positions.
(16) Set flaps to 7-degree position.
(17) Rotate the left angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full counterclockwise position.
(a) Observe the angle-of-attack indicator scale and make sure that both stick shakers are activated when pointer is
between 0.80 and 0.84.
(18) Rotate the left angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full clockwise position and make sure that both stick shakers are
deactivated.
(19) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full clockwise position.
(a) Observe the angle-of-attack indicator scale and make sure that both stick shakers are activated when pointer is
between 0.80 and 0.84.
(20) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe to the full counterclockwise position and make sure that both stick shakers are
deactivated.
(21) Set flaps to 20-degree position.
(22) Rotate the left angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full counterclockwise position.
(a) Observe the angle-of-attack indicator scale and make sure that both stick shakers are activated when pointer is
between 0.80 and 0.84.
(23) Rotate the left angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full clockwise position and make sure that both stick shakers are
deactivated.
(24) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full clockwise position.
(a) Observe the angle-of-attack indicator scale and make sure that both stick shakers are activated when pointer is
between 0.80 and 0.84.
(25) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe to the full counterclockwise position and make sure that both stick shakers are
deactivated.
(26) Set flaps to FULL position.
(27) Rotate the left angle-of- attack probe slowly to the full counterclockwise position.
(a) Observe the angle-of-attack indicator scale and make sure that both stick shakers are activated when pointer is
between 0.80 and 0.84.
(28) Rotate the left angle- of-attack probe slowly to the full clockwise position and make sure that both stick shakers are
deactivated.
(29) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe slowly to the full clockwise position.
(a) Observe the angle-of-attack indicator scale and make sure that both stick shakers are activated when pointer is
between 0.80 and 0.84.
(30) Rotate the right angle-of-attack probe to the full counterclockwise position and make sure that both stick shakers are
deactivated.
C. Angle-of-Attack Self-Test
CAUTION: Do not operate AOA probes on ground for more than 30 seconds. Excessive ground operation can
cause probe to prematurely burn out.
(1) Make sure that the left and right main gear squat switches are in the normal weight on wheels position.
(2) Place the rotary test switch in the AOA/THRU REV position and make sure of the subsequent sequence of events:

(a) The STALL WARN annunciator lamp illuminates.


(b) The AOA PROBE annunciator lamp illuminates.
(c) The FLAPS SPDBK/SP annunciator lamp illuminates.
(d) The angle-of-attack indicator flag appears.
(e) The ADI SPD flag appears.
(f) The angle-of-attack indicator pointer slews to approximately 0 scale and pauses there.
(g) After approximately 4 seconds, the STALL WARN and the AOA PROBE annunciator lamp extinguish.
(h) The FLAPS SPDBK/SP annunciator lamp shall extinguish.
(i) The angle-of-attack indicator OFF flag disappears.
(j) The ADI SPD flags disappear.
(k) The ADI FAST/SLOW pointer indicates FAST.
(l) The angle-of-attack indicator pointer moves up scale.
(m) The angle-of-attack indicator pointer continues to 1.0, the FAST/SLOW pointers on ADI indicate SLOW, stick
shakers are operating when the angle-of-attack indicator pointer is between 0.72 and 0.78 and the OFF flags
appear.
(n) The angle-of-attack indicator OFF flag disappears and the indicator pointer returns through 0 to its position
before the test is initiated.
NOTE: As long as the rotary test switch is set to the AOA/THU REV position, the system will
continue to test.
(o) Return the rotary test switch to OFF.
D. Angle-of-Attack Probe Annunciator Operational Test.
(1) Cycle the speed brakes to extended position. Disengage FLAP/SPLR IND circuit breaker on pilot's circuit breaker
panel and make sure that the FLAP SPDBK/SP indicator lamp illuminates.
(2) Cycle the speed brakes to retracted position. Engage FLAP/SPLR IND circuit breaker and make sure that the FLAP
SPDBK/SP indicator lamp extinguishes.
(3) Place the BATT switch to OFF position.
(4) Disconnect electrical connector from either the left or right angle-of-attack transmitter probe (optional based on
easiest access.)
(5) Place the BATT switch to ON position.
(a) Make sure that AOA PROBE indicator lamp illuminates.
(6) Place the BATT switch to OFF position.
(7) Reconnect electrical connector to angle-of-attack transmitter probe.
(8) Place the BATT switch to the ON position.
(a) Make sure that the AOA PROBE indicator lamp is extinguished.
