ATS740 (2 – Wire) Auto-transfer Switch

Genset Controls - Timers - Monitors - Trips - Battery Charging - Spares & Accessories - Custom Products

• No DC supply required

• No internal batteries

• Use with Contactors

• Use with Motor-Breakers

• Customised units to order

Set in a compact 72 x 144mm DIN standard module, the ATS740 Auto-Transfer-Switch is purpose designed to
operate with contactors or motorised circuit breakers in automatic mains failure (A.M.F) applications where no DC
supply is present. As the unit is AC powered from either the Mains or the Alternator, at the point of Mains Failure
(engine not running) the unit is not powered! Thus, a ‘True Delay on Disconnect’ Start Timer incorporating a
magnetically latching ‘RUN’ relay is employed. This provides a simple 2 – wire (volt-free) connection to a remote
mounted Gen-Set. If our RSM72 Remote Start Module is employed as the engine controller it can easily operate at a
distance in excess of 100 metres.

The front panel has nine ‘High Intensity’ LED’s to indicate mains, alternator & system status together with a selector
switch providing ‘Plant Off (Stop), Auto, Test off Load & Test on Load operating modes. All user adjustable
timers and level potentiometers are accessible at the rear of the unit. No special equipment is required.

MODE SELECTION
AUTO: With the mains supplying the load (‘Mains Available’ & ‘Mains on Load’ and ‘Power’ LED’s lit) the
ATS740 is in automatic ‘Standby’ mode. Should the mains fall out of limits (and remain so for the
duration of the Start Delay time, T1) the RUN relay will ’Set’, issuing a start command to the remote
genset controller. Once the generating set is running and producing an output within limits, the
ATS740 will control the transfer devices and switch the load to the generating set. Should the mains
supply return within limits the unit will control the sequence of events in order to switch the load
back to the mains supply and stop the generating set after the ‘Cool Down Timer’ (T3) has elapsed.
The unit is now back in ‘Standby’ mode.
In this mode the remote test on and off load inputs are enabled as below
TEST
OFF-LOAD: The RUN contacts will close via the Mode-Switch irrespective of the RUN relay status. However,
the mains (provided that it remains within limits) will continue supplying the load. In the event of the
mains falling out of limits, the unit will operate as though in AUTO mode but the engine will not
stop after the mains return sequence is complete
TEST
ON-LOAD: Operates as above but forces the alternator to take the load as if the mains had fallen out of limits,
irrespective of the actual mains-available status.
(STOP)
PLANT OFF: Two-wire ‘Run’ contacts are open circuit (via the mode switch) forcing the engine to stop, via it’s
own control system, irrespective of the RUN relay status. If the unit is powered (from the alternator
or mains) or powered up in this mode, the RUN relay will be re-set, signalling the engine to stop. If
the Mains is within limits it will take the load, ‘Mains Available’, ‘Mains on Load’ and ‘Power’
LED’s lit.

TYPICAL A.M.F OPERATION
1) With healthy Mains, turn the Mode Switch from ‘Off’ to ‘Auto’ (see note.1)

2) Auto mode selected, mains within limits and supplying the load. Engine not running.
‘Mains Available’, ‘Mains On Load’ & ‘Power’ LED’s lit

3) Mains supply out of limits : no LED’s lit (see note.3)

MCC and MBR relays de-energise
Start Delay (T1) times out : pulses ‘Run Plant’ relay to set position, status LED lit (see note.2)
Closed RUN contacts signal engine controller to start
Engine runs up to speed : ‘Power’ LED lit
• Alternator within limits : ‘Alternator Available’ LED lit
• Standby Contactor Control relay (SCC) energises, connecting term. 18 & 19
• Standby Break delay (T4) timing out : ‘Transfer Delay’ LED lit
• Standby Break Relay (SBR) energises

4) Alternator within limits and supplying the load

MCC & MBR
‘Alternator Available’, ‘Alternator On Load’ & ‘Power’ LED’s lit De-energise

4) Mains supply returns to within limits : ‘Mains Available’ LED lit

Mains within limits for ‘Restoration Delay’ (T2) : status LED lit
SCC de-energises and ‘Alternator On Load’ LED extinguishes
If mains goes ‘out of limits’ at this point
Mains within limits for ‘Cool Down’ time (T3) : status LED lit
Mains Contactor Control relay (MCC) energises, connecting term. 9 & 10
Mains Break delay (T5) timing out : ‘Transfer Delay’ LED lit
If mains goes ‘out of limits’ at this point
Mains Break relay (MBR) energises
• If mains goes ‘out of limits’ at this point
• ‘Run Plant’ relay is pulsed to reset position, status LED extinguishes (see note.2)
• RUN contacts open, signalling the engine to stop

NOTES:

1) When initially switching from ‘Off’ to ‘Auto’ mode, the ‘Run Plant’ led will flash on, once.

2) Whilst the unit is powered (‘Power’ LED lit), the ‘Run Plant’ LED indicates the RUN relay status. That is,
LED lit for RUN relay in the ‘Set’ position and un-lit for the Run Relay in the ‘Reset’ position

3) If the Mains supply goes out of limits and returns to within limits during the Start Delay time (engine not
running) the ’Cool Down’ timer will run and its status LED light.
