Warm up Questions
 Today’s goal

• To review factoring and the Quadratic

formula
 Factoring quadratics (for a = 1)
ax2 + bx + c General form of a quadratic
If a = 1, then the equation is x2 + bx + c.
 Some common forms
Recall that a perfect square looks like
𝑎! + 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 ! = 𝑎 + 𝑏 ! or 𝑎! − 2𝑎𝑏 + 𝑏 ! = 𝑎 − 𝑏 !

Recall that a difference of squares looks like

𝑎! − 𝑏 ! = (𝑎 + 𝑏)(𝑎 − 𝑏)
Factoring Quadratics. Follow the rules!
Factoring Quadratic Trinomials
Always factor out the GCF first before factoring
the trinomial

2𝑥 ! + 10𝑥 + 8

Example:
4𝑥 ! − 24𝑥 + 36 𝑥 " +2𝑥 # + 𝑥 !
 Factoring quadratics (for 𝑎 ≠ 1 )
ax2 + bx + c General form of a quadratic
If 𝑎 ≠ 1, then we need to do a little more work
to find the factors
• You could do it by trial and error and
distribute to check
• You could also use one of two methods which
we will look at now
Factoring quadratics by splitting the middle
term

Here are the steps:

we start by splitting the middle term
Multiply a x c
Find the factors of ac that add to give b –use these
factors to split the middle term
Replace the “middle term” with the two terms
Factor in groups
Factoring quadratics
Let’s try one: 5𝑥 ! − 8𝑥 + 3

And another: 3𝑥 ! − 17𝑥 + 10

Factoring quadratics using the X
method
There is another slightly different method using a large X
BIG X Method
Let’s use this method with this one: 8𝑥 ! + 14𝑥 + 3
 As a class let’s solve these using two different methods
