Lesson 1
Notation and Transformations
Warm up
𝑔 𝑥 = 3𝑥 − 6 𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥! − 4

1. 𝑓 3
2. 𝑓 𝑎+1
3. 𝑔 𝑥 = 18
4. 𝑓 𝑥 = 12
5. 𝑔(𝑥 ! )
Pair work with Geogebra
● The object of this investigation is to understand what “a”, “b”, “h”, and “k”
control in a function given that:
Pair work with Geogebra
● To begin have the following:
● Everyone should open the file on the unit plan called Transformations
Honors2 Geogebra.
Here is the link as well:
https://www.geogebra.org/m/fe9w3gbw

● This should open up to an activity on Geogebra (you may have to download

the App Geogebra)
● Open up the document called Transformations H2.
● Work together using Geogebra to answer the questions on the document
So what did we find?
● What do these parameters (a, b, h, k) do to the original function graph
What do the parameters do to the graph?
● a

● b

● h

● k
Check for understanding
● Write down the transformations and the order in which they need to be
applied to 𝑦 = 𝑥 "

1. 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 − 5)" +3

2. 𝑦 = (−2(𝑥 − 1))" −5
Let’s graph 𝑦 = 2(𝑥 − 4)! +1
In your pairs, write an equation for 𝑦 = 𝑥
1. You want to reflect it over the x axis, move it right 2 and up 5

2. You want to reflect it over the y axis, vertically stretch by a factor of 3, shift left
2 and shift up by 7.
Homework –always access through the Unit Plan
If you have time now, begin working on your
homework
● Homework should be completed for the next class
● Always bring your homework to the next class –Mr. Thiessen will often check
your homework for completion

● Today’s lesson on transformations will be revisited throughout the year when

looking at specific function families
