Email 1
(item 11) My new internet service was installed on 3rd January by your company technician. I
subscribe to your Premium Business Plan service. Apparently this guarantees (according to your
website) ‘maximum download speeds and superfast broadband’. However, it is now two weeks
since installation and there have been a series of problems with the service.
(item 12) First of all, internet use is often interrupted or download speeds are very low. This
means that I am unable to videoconference with colleagues and clients. Worse still, on 10th
January there was no service at all so I telephoned your helpline. I was told by a recorded voice
that the service was temporarily interrupted. In fact, the service did not return until 24 hours
later. The internet service continues to be slow.
(item 13) Having been unable to speak to someone, I am writing to you to demand that a
technician solves the problems immediately. I intend to withhold any further direct debris from
my bank account until the matter is resolved.

Email 2
(item 14) With reference to your complaint dated 18th January, we sincerely apologize for the
inconvenience caused by problems with your service. Temporarily, there have been a number of
faults reported in your area of the country and so our service team has been extremely busy
trying to resolve certain technical issues.
(item 15) I am happy to report that we have been able to isolate the problem It has been caused
by local roadworks in your district affecting cables beneath the surface apparently. The lines are
now rapidly being fixed. You should experience normal service by midnight tonight at the latest.
(item 16) Due to the inconvenience caused to you, we will refund your subscription for the
months of January and February. Please accept our apologies and contact us again if you are not
completely satisfied with this response.

This report outlines the situation facing Kompleet Solutions, based on data on business
performance and economic indicators.
It recommends:
- closing the Birmingham operation immediately
- closely monitoring the London and Swindon operations and investigating closure
- monitoring Bristol
- urgently seeking cost-cutting measures
18 _______________________
This report outlines the current situation of Kompleet Solutions’ business, looking at the business
indicators and the economic background. It goes on to make recommendations for the future
direction of the business.
19 ______________________
For the purpose of this report, I have gathered data on three leading indicators of the performance
of Kompleet Solutions: premise occupancy, total income, and profitability.
I have also gathered data on two significant economic indicators, which we can take as a measure
of the health of the national economy and the confidence of leading banks and potential
entrepreneurs: GDP growth rate and unemployment rate.
All of these measures have been studied over the last three full years, which coincides with the
difficulties faced by Kompleet Solutions.
20 ________________________
Total income was generally stable in year 1, with an upturn in year 2, especially in the London
and Swindon operations. The most recent year, year 3, has seen a downward trend in total
income, accelerating in the second half of the year. The new Birmingham operation initially did
well, with rising income, against this trend, but in the second half of the year income has fallen
rapidly.
Profitability is, of course, a function of income and occupancy. A certain minimal level of
occupancy is required to ensure a profit is made. The break-even point for occupancy varies
between locations, but generally falls between 55-65%.
Bristol and London Docklands remain above this break-even point, while Swindon is getting
close to it. As a result, the profitability of the Swindon operation is now borderline, and the
profitability of the London Docklands operation has collapsed.
With an occupancy rate of 35%, Birmingham has never reached break-even, and the loss on these
premises is currently growing.

Part 4. Interpret the graphs and charts in reports.
Instructions: Choose 4 graphs related to the conclusion and order the graph describing in the
report respectively. (items 21-24)
Choice A Choice B Choice C

Choice D Choice E Choice F

As findings shown, profitability is, of course, a function of income and occupancy. A certain
minimal level of occupancy is required to ensure a profit is made. The break-even point for
occupancy varies between locations, but generally falls between 55-65%.
In conclusion, Kompleet Solutions has been very badly affected by the economic downturn.
The economic climate has worsened dramatically in the last year. GDP growth has fallen from
around 3% to 0.5% in less than a year, and the forecast is for continued low growth or stagnation.
Unemployment, with a slight delay, has increased steeply following this.
This has led to the failure of many small businesses, a climate where banks are unwilling or
unable to lend, especially to higher-risk start-up companies, and a sharp decline in the number of
new companies registering and companies expanding.
While our operations in London, Bristol and Swindon have been very badly affected, they are
still profitable. However, our most recent opened operation in Birmingham, opened only shortly
before the downturn began, has never reached a break-even level of occupancy, and in the
current climate it is unlikely to do so.

Subject: Training course in how to use spreadsheets
I have found some interesting information about a computer training course taking place in the
city centre. In our department we use Excel a lot, but we don’t really get the maximum benefit
from it in terms of cost and time savings. Therefore I think it would be useful for someone
from our department to attend this course. I have a copy of the leaflet advertising the course,
and the details are as follows. The name of the course is ‘Spreadsheets for Financial Planning’,
and the course dates are from 4 June to 8 June. The course runs every evening, from 18:00 to
19:30. The cost is $750.
I am available at that time and I would like to go. I can bring back the skills I learn and help
other people in the future. I know it’s quite expensive, but I would like to ask you if it is
possible for the company to pay the course fees. Unfortunately I can’t afford to pay for it out
of my own money. Thank you very much.

Write your note here.

my apologies as the fault was clearly outs.

Dear Sir/Madam
I’m (38)____________________________________ about the conference facilities at your
hotel.
I’m arranging a conference for a group of about 50 managers from around the country. I’m
(39)_________________________ both your conference suite and hotel rooms for the delegates.
The conference will be for two days in early June. The exact dates are yet to be confirmed. I
would need a room large enough to accommodate all 50 delegates at once, and also three or four
smaller meetings rooms with space for 15 people.
I will also need approximately 50 hotel rooms for the two nights of the conference.
(40) I’d _________________________________________if you can provide these facilities. If
so, could you please give me separate quotations for the conference venue and the hotel rooms?
Regards,
