IndianOil’s efforts in green hydrogen space

IndianOil R&D has been at the forefront of pioneering hydrogen research within the oil and gas
sector in India for the past two decades. Going beyond its traditional boundaries, IndianOil R&D
has established cutting-edge research facilities focused on hydrogen production, storage, and its
utilization in fuel cells. The primary objective of these endeavors is to promote indigenization,
enhance efficiency, extend the lifespan of hydrogen technologies, and maintain a competitive
cost advantage.

By collaborating with leading academic / research institutions in India, IndianOil R&D is

actively engaged in advancing biomass gasification techniques. This initiative has led to a
significant leap in efficiency and GH2 yield improvements. Pilot plants are under development
based on different electrolyzer technologies, biomass gasification and biomethane reforming.
These endeavors promise to play a pivotal role in shaping India's evolving energy landscape.

Having deep roots in hydrogen R&D, IndianOil is progressing ahead towards indigenizing low
and high temperature electrolyzer technologies. The research is tailored to address the pressing
needs of intermittent operation, enhanced performance and durability and optimizing the
integration models for effective deployments.

Embarking upon ambitious yet targeted research on "Power to X" technology using solid oxide
electrolysis cells (SOEC), IndianOil R&D is taking giant steps towards co-electrolyzing water
and CO2, yielding syngas and synthetic fuels.

IndianOil is marching ahead to deploy 15 fuel cell buses in Delhi-NCR, marking the country's
first "Make in India" initiative in the hydrogen and fuel cell sector

Nurturing the spirit of startups, the centre is supporting critical hydrogen projects and has also
collaborated with international universities to strengthen the industry academia partnership to
boost domestic technology development and facilitate early adoption in the Indian market.

Marching ahead, Indian Oil is in the process of establishing a 10,000-ton-per-annum (TPA)

green hydrogen facility at the Panipat refinery. This ambitious project is set to initiate a
significant transformation in the green hydrogen sector, acting as a catalyst for its adoption
across hard-to-abate sectors.
