Consider the function fn (x) = (cos 2x)(cos 4x) … (cos 2n x), n ∈ Z+ .

1a. Determine whether fn is an odd or even function, justifying your answer. [2 marks]

1b. By using mathematical induction, prove that [8 marks]

In the Canadian city of Ottawa:

97% of the population speak English,

38% of the population speak French,
36% of the population speak both English and French.

5a. Calculate the percentage of the population of Ottawa that speak English [2 marks]
but not French.

The total population of Ottawa is 985 000.

5b. Calculate the number of people in Ottawa that speak both English and [2 marks]
French.

5c. Write down your answer to part (b) in the form a × 10k where [2 marks]
1 ⩽ a < 10 and k ∈ Z.
The company Snakezen’s Ladders makes ladders of different lengths. All the
ladders that the company makes have the same design such that:
the first rung is 30 cm from the base of the ladder,
the second rung is 57 cm from the base of the ladder,
the distance between the first and second rung is equal to the distance between
all adjacent rungs on the ladder.
The ladder in the diagram was made by this company and has eleven equally
spaced rungs.

6a. Find the distance from the base of this ladder to the top rung. [3 marks]

6b. The company also makes a ladder that is 1050 cm long. [3 marks]
Find the maximum number of rungs in this 1050 cm long ladder.

In an arithmetic sequence, the first term is 3 and the second term is 7.

7a. Find the common difference. [2 marks]

Jashanti is saving money to buy a car. The price of the car, in US Dollars (USD),
can be modelled by the equation

P = 8500(0.95)t .
Jashanti’s savings, in USD, can be modelled by the equation

S = 400t + 2000.
In both equations t is the time in months since Jashanti started saving for the car.

9a. Write down the amount of money Jashanti saves per month. [1 mark]

9b. Use your graphic display calculator to find how long it will take for [2 marks]
Jashanti to have saved enough money to buy the car.

Jashanti does not want to wait too long and wants to buy the car two months after
she started saving. She decides to ask her parents for the extra money that she
needs.

9c. Calculate how much extra money Jashanti needs. [3 marks]
