I’m 34 years old, I have no teaching experience yet
because after I graduate in college and passed the LET I focus as a full time mom to my two lovely son. The only experienced I had in teaching, is during my field study and practicum, as I observed that teachers employed different approaches in teaching. There are strict, joker, and passionate teacher. As I interviewed one of them, she said that she is science major but she teaches Aralin Panlipunan in the public school. She’s struggling a lot since this subject is far from her expertise. But, I admire her because of her dedication, just imagine she has 50-60 student in one class but she managed to handle and she know them very well. There learning style, family background and most of all their names because I am not good at remembering names. So, it made me think what kind of teacher I want to be in the future. This observation helps me realize how important teaching philosophy to us teacher. It guides us throughout the teaching process to attained our objective. It reflects what are we as a teacher, how we teach what are the strategies and methods we used and most of all how we handle our student in the class. I believe that my task as a teacher is to facilitate the development of every child to the maximum by helping them to master the basic skill and always put our learner first. We must have considered their needs, cultural background, their different learning style etc., we must not forget that student is active, the one who is responsible of creating meaningful learning we cannot impose meaning; student makes meaning of what they had learned. I will strive hard to teach my subject matter with mastery so that every child will used his/her basic skills to continue acquiring knowledge, skills and values for him/her to go beyond basic literacy. We teachers are like a tool to facilitate them throughout the process of learning so that they will be guided. As what I had experience during my Field Study at Laurita National High School student are more active when they engage in fun and meaningful learning. At that time, we incorporate our topic into games and the teacher was surprised because the student who never participated during her discussion is participated to us. This scenario helps me to open my eyes that we as a teacher, as a prime mover of knowledge, we must give them always an opportunity to learned, give them fun and challenging task and help them explore their imaginative skills, give them supplementary materials, and we as a teacher as the best tool among other tools, must continue in seeking development as a teacher. As john Dewey quote that, learners are active and the one who created their learnings, they can learn anywhere either inside the four corner of the school, outside the school or even in their peers like what social learning theory of Lev Vygotsky said. Inside the classroom we have different kind of learner, from their intelligences, level of development and their socio economic background. To address this diverse learners, I applied different strategies, during my practicum I used different strategies/method in one topic since I have diverse learner, I have a topic about “Imperyong China” at the first I make a word puzzle and let them build a word and write in the board, this will help those kenestithic and analytical learner to participate. Then, throughout my discussion I ask question to address those verbal intelligent learners and at the end of the lesson I ask them to write a reflection paper about the topic. Teacher and student must have a positive relationship toward each other because learning take place when the student feel they are valued, respected and feel they are important. We, as educator must clearly define our objectives as a teacher and our purpose, so that we are guided in educating our student. Setting their behavior will help to have open and inclusive environment. Just like respecting their opinions, appreciating their effort this will be a big help to push them forward and continue empowered them to work hard. As, I had remembered I always give time to have a heart talk, just to make them feel that I am concerned to them, because teachers are the second parent to our student and the school are their second home. As a parent we will never get tired in guiding our children and open an opportunity to develop their skills from optimum to maximum. Like for example in the activity don’t let the bright student always leads because they already develop their skills and confidence in leading the group but let the average and poor student lead also. Just make it sure you as a teacher will help and guide them at first.
