You'll see these papier mache forms in lots of places--gift shops, expensive department stores and
exclusive catalogues. But with this book, you can take the unfinished forms and make a hand-
some Christmas decoration, an elegant country piece or add baby's breath, ruffles and lace for a
Victorian look. And you can do all this quickly and easily. We've kept the painting simple--you'll
be surprised what you can accomplish with acrylic paint and a sponge!

A couple of new products are shown here, a loosely woven hemp-type ribbon called "Natural
Wrap" (although you may find it under different names) and a stone finish that comes in a spray
can called "Fleck Stone™." The designer, Pat Lingo, has pre-tested these projects on the custom- ‘i
ers in her store so we know they can be quickly and easily created. Enjoy! i

Dedicated to the crew at "Crafts & Ewe." Thanks for all your help.

ls yard of 45" wide green/pink print
fabric
6 pink silk rosebuds, each bud is 1" long
mauve preserved baby's breath
glittered natural gyp (dried flowers)
alpine green acrylic paint
1" wide paintbrush
Ultra Glaze™ spray finish by Carnival
cloth covered wire
tacky craft glue
glue gun & glue sticks

1 Paint the horse and the crossbars on the

rocker green (do not paint the rockers),
let dry. Spray the horse with Ultra
Glaze™ (several light coats are better
than one heavy coat that may run).

2 Cut the fabric into three 8" wide strips.

Spread tacky glue on the bottom of one
rocker. Place the cut edge of one fabric
length as shown.

3 Clip the fabric at the crossbars on the

rockers. Wrap the fabric around the
rocker, overlapping the ends. Trim
excess fabric. Cut the fabric on the ends
so 3" extends past the rocker end.

4 To finish each rocker end: fold the extra

fabric down from the top. Fold the two
sides in on the end and down to the
bottom of the rocker. Glue all the edges
to secure. Repeat to cover the other
rocker.
To cover each crossbar: cut off a3 ‘/2"
long fabric strip. Cut the fabric to fit
around the feet. Spread tacky glue on the
crossbar. Position the fabric and smooth
in place. Repeat for the other crossbar.

Divide the raffia in half, set half aside for

the tail. For the mane: separate out six ©
long strands of raffia--these will be used to
tie the mane together. Now divide the
raffia for the mane in half. Hold one
bunch and make a fold 2" from one end to
make a loop. Wrap the base of this loop
with a raffia strand, tie in a knot.

Bring the long end up to make another

loop beside the first. Wrap the base with
the raffia strand, wrapping around both
loops. Knot.

Bring the long end up to make another

loop, tying it in the same manner as the

bunch. Repeat with the rest of the raffia
that is to be used for the mane.

Glue the two mane pieces on the horse end

to end. Bring a few loops between the ears
to the front. Cut 2 '/2" sprigs of baby's
breath and gypsophelia and glue among the
loops of the mane.

10 For the tail: cut the remaining raffia in

thirds. Pull out a heavy strand and wrap it
around the bunch 2" from one end, tie in a
knot. Place the raffia on top of the tail
with the long strands extending toward the
mane, glue. Fold the long strands back
over the short ends and arrange to cover
the tail. Glue 3"-4" sprigs of baby's breath
and gyp among the raffia near the top of
the tail.

11 Place the remaining fabric strip right side

down. Fold the top edge down 2". Fold
the bottom edge up '/2". Then fold it up 2"
to overlap the top edge. Glue to hold. Use
this length to make a bow (see page 28)
with four 3" loops, a center loop, a 4" tail

TO MAKE A BOW: For the tail or
streamer, measure 18" from one end of
the ribbon (or as directed for your
project). Pinch between the thumb and
finger of your left hand.

Form a loop the desired length with the

ribbon and pinch to hold. Make a half
twist with the ribbon to keep the "right
side" of the ribbon facing you.

Make a loop and a half twist on the other

side of your hand. Make two more
loops, one on each side of your hand.

Make a center loop by bringing the

ribbon toward you--up, over and around
your thumb.

Make the rest of the loops, keeping an

equal number of loops on each side of
your hand.

Bend a 6" length of cloth covered wire or

chenille stem in half (bare wire will
loosen and not hold securely). Insert
through the center loop.

Bring the wire ends to the back of the

bow and twist to secure the bow. Trim
the ends of the streamers at an angle.

To add extra streamers, cut the streamers

separately and place behind the bow.
Insert the streamer ends between the
wires securing the bow and twist the
wires.

Any size bow can be created following

these steps--when using wide ribbons,
make longer loops.
