Muhammad Ali, originally born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., was a famous boxer. Even
today, he is thought of as one of the best boxers of all time. But Ali is famous for much
more than his athletic talent. He was also an activist who fought for his beliefs. He spoke
out on issues of race, religion, and politics.
Ali experienced a lot of success and fame as a boxer during the 1960s. At this time, the
United States was fighting the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War was a long conflict that had
already seen many deaths. To help increase the number of troops, the U.S. government
began drafting people into the military. This means the government required certain eligible
American men to join the military. Muhammad Ali was against the draft and the war. His
anti-war views and actions led to a historic Supreme Court case, Clay v. United States.
On April 28, 1967, the U.S. government called on Muhammad Ali to join the U.S.
military. He refused. Ali had converted to the religion of Islam in 1964. He believed the war
went against his religious beliefs and was unjust. He told reporters that he did not want to
fight in a war that was killing people of color in another country while Black Americans
suffered from racial violence in their own country.
At the time, certain people were granted the right to not join the military based on their
religious, moral, or ethical beliefs. Ali asked to be granted this right. However, the lower
courts rejected Ali’s request. At a jury trial in 1967, Ali was sentenced to five years in
prison and a $10,000 fine for refusing to join the military after being drafted. At this time,
about half of all Americans still supported the Vietnam War. Many Americans criticized
Ali’s actions. He was also banned from boxing and stripped of his titles. Ali paid a large
