Question 3: Read the following passage. Then answer the questions. (1 mark each; 5
marks total)
Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali, originally born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., was a famous boxer. Even
today, he is thought of as one of the best boxers of all time. But Ali is famous for much
more than his athletic talent. He was also an activist who fought for his beliefs. He spoke
out on issues of race, religion, and politics.
Ali experienced a lot of success and fame as a boxer during the 1960s. At this time, the
United States was fighting the Vietnam War. The Vietnam War was a long conflict that had
already seen many deaths. To help increase the number of troops, the U.S. government
began drafting people into the military. This means the government required certain eligible
American men to join the military. Muhammad Ali was against the draft and the war. His
anti-war views and actions led to a historic Supreme Court case, Clay v. United States.
On April 28, 1967, the U.S. government called on Muhammad Ali to join the U.S.
military. He refused. Ali had converted to the religion of Islam in 1964. He believed the war
went against his religious beliefs and was unjust. He told reporters that he did not want to
fight in a war that was killing people of color in another country while Black Americans
suffered from racial violence in their own country.
At the time, certain people were granted the right to not join the military based on their
religious, moral, or ethical beliefs. Ali asked to be granted this right. However, the lower
courts rejected Ali’s request. At a jury trial in 1967, Ali was sentenced to five years in
prison and a $10,000 fine for refusing to join the military after being drafted. At this time,
about half of all Americans still supported the Vietnam War. Many Americans criticized
Ali’s actions. He was also banned from boxing and stripped of his titles. Ali paid a large

fine so he would not have to go to jail. Meanwhile, he fought the results of his trial. He and
his lawyers spent the next three and a half years fighting these results.
During these years, Ali spoke against the war and racial injustice at college campuses.
He became an anti-war and civil rights hero. Other civil rights heroes, like Martin Luther
King Jr., supported Ali’s anti-war beliefs. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Vietnam
War became more and more unpopular. People across the U.S. protested against the war.
Ali supported these efforts.
Muhammad Ali continued to fight the results of his jury trial. He took his case to a
higher federal court. The judges at this court upheld the results of his trial two different
times. His last chance to avoid jail time was to have his case heard by the Supreme Court.
The Court’s decision, either way, would be final. At first, the Supreme Court was prepared
to rule against Ali and send him to jail. However, a legal researcher who worked for Justice
John Marshall Harlan told him to read more about Ali’s religious beliefs before voting.
After doing so, Justice Harlan changed his mind. He decided to vote in favor of Ali. The
Justices came together and rethought their decision. On June 28, 1971, the Supreme Court
announced that they had voted to reverse Ali’s conviction. The Justices felt that the lower
courts had never explained their reasons for not allowing Ali to be excused from military
service based on his religious beliefs. All eight Justices on the Supreme Court ruled in favor
of Ali.
Muhammad Ali regained his boxing license and had a long boxing career. He continued
to speak out against racism, religious intolerance, and war. Today, many people honor his
fight by working towards a more just world.
