READING COMPREHENSION
Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions.

Last Name “Ever”, First Name “Greatest”

1. Muhammad Ali was one of America’s greatest 20th-century boxers and athletes.
Muhammad Ali was born Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky. He started fighting at the age
of 12 after his bicycle was stolen. In 1960, Clay won a gold medal in the Olympics in Rome,
Italy.

2. Clay then turned professional under the guidance of Angelo Dundee and became famous
for his unusual style. Ali would tirelessly promote himself and earned the nickname the
“Louisville Lip” for statements such as “I am the Greatest, I said that even before I knew I
was”, “I’m so mean, I make medicine sick”, and “I’m young, I’m pretty, I’m fast, and no one
can beat me” among others. His bragging would get into the minds of his opponents
through psychological warfare, which was not common for boxers at the time. He would
even predict which rounds he would knock them out in through some of the earliest forms
of rap. In 1964, he defeated Sonny Liston to win the World Heavyweight Championship.

3. In 1965, Clay joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name to Muhammad Ali. Ali
defended his championship for the next several years but in 1967, Ali was stripped of his
championship for rejecting the draft and refusing to fight in the Vietnam War. Ali
immediately became a controversial figure and was the subject of outrage for many
Americans. According to Ali, the American government had done more harm to the
African-American community than the Vietnamese ever could and thus, he would not
