Animal Heroes
Humans have had pets since the prehistoric era and they offer us excellent
company. They can also protect us. Today we have the story of two heroic
animals.
Erin Wilson and her dog, Eva, were hiking along a river trail in Northern
California. Everything seemed normal until suddenly an enormous mountain
lion attacked Erin with its claws. Erin was shocked and shouted Eva’s name.
Luckily, Eva had heard her and jumped on the mountain lion. The two animals
fought, but the mountain lion was stronger, and it held Eva’s head with its teeth.
Erin was worried. She threw stones at the mountain lion, but it wasn’t enough.
She returned to her car to get a plastic tube to use as a weapon. Fortunately,
another woman had seen her and helped her fight the mountain lion. This time
the mountain lion ran away. Eva was seriously injured during the fight. At first,
the vets thought she would survive, but sadly she died several weeks later.
Although people don’t consider cats to be brave, there are exceptions. Fred
Everett’s cat, Bandit, prevented a robbery. One night, while Fred was sleeping,
Bandit jumped on his bed and attacked him with her claws. He had never seen
her behave like this before, so he got up to investigate. He went downstairs and
saw two men standing outside the door, and one of them had a gun. Fred went
back to get his own gun, but the robbers had disappeared. Fred had adopted
Bandit from an animal charity and said, “I saved her life, and now she has saved
mine.”
Both of these animals protected their owners. Please write to us at our address
about your brave pet. The best story will appear in next week’s magazine, and
the writer will win £100.
