FIRST TERM ENGLISH TEST

Read the text carefully then do the activities.

What is peace? People often say that peace is opposite of war. However, there are many other ways to define peace. Some
people say that peace means more than ‘no war’. Every year many people die in wars, but more people are killed in many other
ways.
Each year millions of children and poor people die because they do not have enough food. These hungry people cannot
afford to buy food they need. These people are not fighting in a war but they do not have peace in their life either. Therefore, peace
can also be the opposite of hunger.
Another cause of death for millions of people every year is disease. Many mortal diseases can be prevented by clean water
or cured by medicine. Few people die of dysentery in developed countries, but many people in poor countries die of it and many
other preventable diseases. So peace can also be the opposite of preventable diseases.
There are many wars between countries. However, people are also killed by people from their own country. Whenever
there are political or religious conflicts, which often results in riots, some people get killed. Therefore, peace can be the opposite of
lacking freedom in religious beliefs.

Malcolm X has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history. Malcolm was an
African American Muslim minister and human rights activist. He was a courageous advocate for the rights of African
Americans, a man who indicted white Americans for their crimes against black Americans.
Malcolm X had a very harsh childhood. His father died when he was young. It was rumored that he was killed by
whites. When he was thirteen, his mother was placed in a mental hospital, and he was placed in a series of foster
homes. In 1946, he was caught involved in a robbery. Malcolm was sentenced to ten years in prison.
While in prison, Malcolm X had undergone radical changes in his personality. He became a member of the “ Nation
of Islam ”and quickly he rose to become its leader and public face for a dozen of years. However, the teachings of the
Nation of Islam had nothing to do with our religion. It taught black supremacy and advocated separation of black and
white Americans.
After visiting Mecca, Malcolm had the chance to recognize the true Islam . He said that it had
opened his eyes, as he saw all colours following the teachings of the Koran – that it wasn’t violent, but
accepting the true equality between all people and races. This was something the Nation of Islam hadn’t
followed.
In February 1965, less than a year after leaving the Nation of Islam, he was assassinated by three members of the
group for turning against them.

OSLO: The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded its 2008 Peace Prize on Friday to Martti AHTISAARI,
the former Finnish president who has been associated over decades with peace efforts and quiet, cautious
diplomacy from Asia to Africa and Europe. Out of 197 people nominated for the annual prize, the committee
said, Ahtisaari had been chosen "for his important efforts in several continents and over three decades to
resolve international conflicts."
He has played a central role in ending conflicts that took root in the late 20th century and threatened
the early 21st century with conflagrations in many places. Specifically, the committee mentioned his work in
ending South African domination of Namibia, the former South-West Africa, from the 1970s to the late 1990s ,
and peace efforts in the Indonesian province of Aceh, Kosovo, Northern Ireland, Central Asia, the Horn of
Africa and, most recently, in Iraq.
In an initial response, Ahtisaari said he was "very pleased and grateful" at receiving the prize, which is
worth $1.4 million. It will be awarded to him at a ceremony in Oslo on December 10.
In a television interview after the award was announced, Ahtisaari indicated that he might slow the
pace of his travels, which, he said, had kept him away from Finland for 200 days a year. "I want to spend more
time with my wife," he said.

Non Peace is a state of war, the absence of harmony. This term is applied to describe a cessation of
violent international conflict; in this international context, peace is the opposite of war. Peace can also
describe a relationship between any parties characterized by respect, justice, and goodwill. The
traditional political definition of peace and the word itself originated among the ancient Romans who
defined peace, 'pax,' as absentia 'belli', the absence of war.
Today, peace is often understood as the absence of war between two or more state- organized
armies. Nonetheless, the concept of peace also applies to the state of people within their respective
geopolitical entities, as civil war, state-sponsored genocide, terrorism, and other violence are all threats
to peace on an international level. Since World War II, wars among states have become less common,
while violent internal conflicts have become a more central concern. Present day Syria, for example, is
the site of widespread suffering and violence, despite its not being engaged in war with another
sovereign state. Peace, in this context, is understood as the absence of violence among groups, whether
part of a state apparatus or not. Influential peace, researcher Johan Galtung has described this former
conception of peace as "negative peace", suggesting that underlying points of conflict must themselves
be resolved in order for true peace to exist.
During the 1950s and 60s, when Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement carried out
various non-violent activities aimed at ending segregation and racial persecution in America, they
understood peace as more than just the absence of violence. They observed that while there was not
open combat between blacks and whites, there was an unjust system in place in which the government
deprived African Americans of equal rights. Martin Luther King observed that "True peace is not merely
the absence of tension: it is the presence of justice."
