Choice Articles:

Directions: You will choose two articles to read today. They can be about the same
topic, or different topics. For each article, complete each step of the assignment by
following directions listed and answering the questions.
______________________________________________________________________

Article 1

Step 1: Choose an article either from the folder about examples of systemic
discrimination, or find one of your own from a scholarly source and get it approved by
Mrs. Harper.

1. What is the title of the article you chose?

Japanese-American relocation in the U.S. during World War II
2. Why did you select this article?
I chose this article because i’ve already read about it in a past history class.
Step 2: Read the article and write a summary using WWWWWH below.
Who? Japanese-Americans
What? Relocated inland/put in concentration camps.
When? February 1942
Where? U.S. west coast to other more inland locations.
Why? Distrust of japanese-americans and to “protect them”.
How? Executive Order 9066.

Summary:
Japanese-Americans were forced from there homes on the west coast because
of the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the japanese. The irrational fear of espionage and
treason from japanese-americans forced them to concentration camps for their “safety”.
Once the war was over they were allowed to return home and were given compensation
for their treatment.
Step 3: Answer the following discussion questions in complete sentences using ACE.

3. Who was being discriminated against? Why?

Japanese-Americans were discriminated against because of their Japanese heritage.
Irrational fear from the people of the west coast and in the government prompted the
discrimination they were forced to deal with.
4. What injustices were present in the article you read?
The primary injustice was Japanese-Americans being forced from their homes to camps
further inland. Roosevelt took that course of action to remove them from the coast. Fear
of the unknown gave people the reason they wanted to commit these injustices.
5. How is this an example of oppression?
This is an example of oppression because Japanese-Americans were forced from their
homes for a majority of the war and were essentially put into concentration camps (not
as bad as germany) and had rights taken from them. Because of their lineage they were
assumed to be dangerous and had actions done to innocent people trying to live their
lives.

6. Compare and contrast- what similarities and differences do you see between the
discrimination of those in the article you read and the discrimination Elie and his family
faced in Night?
Both Elie from Night and the Japanese-Americans were forced from their homes
and into camps where they spent most of their time during the war. However the
American concentration camps had far better conditions then the ones in
Germany meant to kill.

Article 2

Step 1: Choose another article either from the folder about examples of systemic
discrimination, or find one of your own from a scholarly source and get it approved by
Mrs. Harper.

1. What is the title of the article you chose? Mythbusting Ancient Rome: Throwing
Christians to the Lions
2. Why did you select this article? I chose this article because it seems interesting
and i’m a christian.

Step 2: Read the article and write a summary using WWWWWH below.
Who? Christians and Romans
What? Persecution of other punishment
When? Early AD to AD 300’s
Where? Rome and it’s states
Why? Being a threat to rome/not following roman religion/amusement.
How? Thrown to lions, crucifixion, burning, etc.

Summary: Romans persecuted Christians for many reasons in mob style

brutality. After some time the Emperor's joined in with edicts and varying
punishment.

Step 3: Answer the following discussion questions in complete sentences using ACE.

3. What injustices were present in the article you read?

Some injustices present was punishments for not following roman religion of just
because they were seen as a threat. Persecution became a common practice for
awhile but wasn’t supported by all.
4. Who was being discriminated against? Why?

Christians because they were seen as a threat to the Empire and did not conform
to everyone’s will. Sometimes it was solely for fun other times it was for crimes.
(laws set just to get christians on occasion).
5. How is this an example of oppression?
Example of oppression because christians were persecuted for a little more or less than
300 years. (Not the entire time though). Killing to exile to laws st up to be against the
christian and take their rights is a great example of oppression.
6. Compare and contrast- what similarities and differences do you see between the
discrimination of those in the article you read and the discrimination Elie and his family
faced in Night?
The christians and Elie both faced persecution and had laws set against them by the
state. However Elie dealt with a small window of great suffering while the christians
suffered 100’s of years of suffering.

Reflections:

Step 1: Look back at our essential questions for the unit. Answer each using ACE with
evidence from the articles you read today.

Essential Questions:
1. When is it justified to be selfish over selfless?
It’s never justified to be selfish over selfless. Strength comes from people coming
together to maintain their way of life looking out for oneself leaves one weak and
prone to fail.
2. To what extent do individuals have control over their lives? What role does
chance, choice, or fate play?
Chance and choice have little effect on people’s lives. Fate plays a large factor. It
was fate Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and that Christians would suffer. They
couldn’t have made a choice or have chance effect the outcome.
3. How do individuals respond to systemic brutality, persecution, and violence?
People respond with strength. They endure till the time comes when they no
longer need to suffer and can be who they are. They stay together and ride the storm
out.
Step 2: Reflect on the question below and respond in complete sentences.

4. How did your answers to the Essential Questions change after reading these
articles?

My answer stayed the same or was strengthened. They prove my views on persecution.
