Article 1

Step 1: Choose an article either from the folder about examples of systemic
discrimination, or find one of your own from a scholarly source and get it approved by
Mrs. Harper.

1. What is the title of the article you chose?

Civil Rights Leaders: Martin Luther King
Jr.
2. Why did you select this article?
I selected this article because Martin Luther had showed us that if we want something to
change we need to be able to stand up for ourselves and the people around us.
Step 2: Read the article and write a summary using WWWWWH below.
Who?Martin Luther KIng Jr.
What? Was an activist and a leader for his people.
When?From 1929-1969
Where?Georgia
Why?Martin Luther King Jr. wanted to end all segregation against
African-Americans.
How?He did so by boycotting, marching and protesting, giving inspiring
speeches.
Summary:Martin Luther King Jr. had devoted himself after going to college and
marrying his wife to help eliminated segregation against african americans. He
did so by giving speeches at marches and other events. He helped pass the law
were people could no longer segregate in public. He did lots more before being
assassinated in 1969.

Step 3: Answer the following discussion questions in complete sentences using ACE.

1. Who was being discriminated against? Why?

African americans were being discriminated because of their color. In the text it
mentioned how they would have to give up their seats for the whites. This shows how
the people showed little to no respect at all to them. Treating them as a minor priority,
and most importantly as if they weren't even people.

2. What injustices were present in the article you read?

They were always treated as if they didn’t matter and like they didn't deserve any
respect. It mentioned how they weren't even allowed to vote. They were treated
as if they didn't have a voice, as if they didn't have rights or were even humans.
3. How is this an example of oppression?
They were shown many levels of oppression when they tried to stand up for what
they believed in. during their rallies and marches violence was used against them
hurting women and children. They were being oppressed so much that they
couldn't even try to stand up for themselves in fear of hurting their family or
themselves.
4. Compare and contrast- what similarities and differences do you see between the
discrimination of those in the article you read and the discrimination Elie and his family
faced in Night?
The discrimination they faced was very similar. They were treated as if all the problems
that happened was because of them, they were treated with no respect. The difference
was that Elie and his family had been sent to a concentration camp with others of their
kind so they could die. They were both treated poorly over something that they couldn't
control, their featured and religions.

Article 2

Step 1: Choose another article either from the folder about examples of systemic
discrimination, or find one of your own from a scholarly source and get it approved by
Mrs. Harper.

1. What is the title of the article you chose?

U.S. closes Mexico border crossing
after firing tear gas at migrants
2. Why did you select this article?
I selected this this article because it is something that is going on right now, it's a
problem that needs to be solved.
Step 2: Read the article and write a summary using WWWWWH below.

Who?Migrants, U.S border patrol

What?Migrants are trying to cross over and border patrol is tear gassing them to
stop.
When?November 25
Where?Border town of Tijuana mexico
Why?U.S doesn't want to help the migrants who are seeking refuge and asylum.
How?By tear gassing the people and keeping them detained.

Summary:People are trying to migrate to the U.S after facing poverty and
extreme violence in their country. They tried doing so by crossing in the
thousands by the border. The U.S isnt letting them in and is trying to put up walls
to keep these peole from escaping their old lives.

Step 3: Answer the following discussion questions in complete sentences using ACE.

1. What injustices were present in the article you read?

The injustice present is that they are treating migrants in a cruel manner not
letting them in to escape from the hardship they face. Many say that they are
violent people coming to kill. That is not true though all they want is a better life.
2. Who was being discriminated against? Why?
The migrants had been discriminated against because people dont want them
here. They are creating a problem and the way that they are trying to get in is
unlawful. The people are being discriminated because they arent getting the
same chances that people from other places might be getting.
3. How is this an example of oppression?
By using tear gass they used oppresion to keep them from entering. It mentions that
when things got too out of hand border patrol used tear gas n them. This is oppresion
because you are sing cruel ways to try and get what you want. Especially because there
were children and women in there when this had happened.
4. Compare and contrast- what similarities and differences do you see between the
discrimination of those in the article you read and the discrimination Elie and his family
faced in Night?
Its similar the Night because they had been treated with violence. They were treated as
if all the problems were because of them. Although they were both attacked, the people
in night were locjed in a camp to work for the people that were trying to kill them.
