FOREWORD
Self-Learning Module
1
Learning language through literary appreciation by
incorporating social issues exposes learners to different
cultures of the society including one’s culture. Learners
develop sociolinguistic and sociocultural understanding and
apply them to their use of the language.

Welcome to La Casa de Familia - a home of valuing


family regardless of race, gender, sex, ethnicity, and
ideology. Let us altogether discover the importance of it
along with the development of language skills

As we go along with the lesson, remember to involve


yourself to understand the lesson better as you develop your
English competence.

CONTENT STANDARD

The learner demonstrates understanding of how Anglo-American literature and other
text types serve as a means of valuing other people; also how to use processing
information strategies, different forms of adverbs and conditionals for him/her to play
an active part in a Chamber Theatre presentation.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner proficiently plays an active part in Chamber Theatre presentation through
employing effective verbal and non-verbal strategies based on the following: Focus,
Voice, Delivery. Facial Expression, Style and Body Movements or Gestures.

The learner demonstrates communicative competence through his/her understanding
of British-American Literature, including Philippine Literature and other text types for
a deeper appreciation of Philippine Culture and those of our countries.

my skills to help improve the company’s

(Ms. Wanda went out to Mr. Sanchez’s office and murmured “I


don’t understand! What’s wrong with being a woman in a
workplace?”)

significant because this talks about common problem of society that is timely and
relevant.

What do you think is the message being conveyed in the line?

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, DISCRIMINATION or the so-called,


Prejudice is an injury from judgment or action of another in disregard of one’s rights.
In other words, it is an unfavorable opinion or feeling with senseless thought or reason,
It simply means to pre-judge others.

Discrimination can have strong influence on how people behave and interact with
others, particularly with those who are different from them. Discrimination is baseless
and usually negative toward a member of a group.

Forms of Discrimination
There are various forms of discrimination that most of the people have been facing. Here
are some of the few and common ones:

Age Discrimination: This happens when someone is treated unfavorably against you
or bullies you because of your age. This also happens when a requirement, condition or
practice is imposed that disadvantages a person or group because of their age and is
not reasonable.

Disability Discrimination: it is when you are treated less well or put at a
disadvantage for a reason that relates to your disability.

Gender Discrimination: It is also known as sexual discrimination. It is any action that


specifically denies opportunities, privileges, or rewards to a person (or a group) because
of gender.

Political Belief/Affiliation Discrimination: This happens when a person (or a group)


is unfavorably through bashing especially in social media because of their political
thoughts and ideas do not go along with the majority. This kind of prejudice is common
in the Philippines.

Race/Racial Discrimination: is any discrimination against individuals based on their
skin color, racial origin, or ethnic group.

Note: You are finally done reading the different types of


discrimination. It is time for you to answer the following
activities below. Always remember to ask your teacher if there
are some words you find confusing. Enjoy answering all the

Note: From those activities, we can ultimately tell


ourselves that DISCRIMINATION does not have
any good effect on the people. For sure, we do not
like to hurt other people’s feelings. Thus, let us all
spread love and do something about it.

work as a receptionist. She meets all of the job requirements, but following an interview,
the employer tells Sara “ You wouldn’t fit in here”.

____4. One of the company’s rules is to know the age of the applicants before they hire.
This is to make sure that they will be able to meet the company’s standard when it
comes to efficiency of their employees in the workplace.

____5. Larry was a little dismayed with the policies set by the local government in the
city. Hence, he was trying to question and express his doubts about the said matter and
posted it in his social media accounts. That post went viral and many people because
of that criticized him.

____6. Daniel has some difficulty in understanding the lesson though it’s a simple one.
It’s always hard for him to catch up with his classmates’ pace. According to her mother,
he really has learning disability. Because of that, Daniel is always the center of teasing
and bullying.

_____7. Ms. Lopez’s leg was amputated when she was a child due to car accident. Despite
her situation, she was able to finish her study and earned a degree. Now, she is applying
a job in BPO industry and a lot of companies are rejecting her application though she
has the requirements and ability to do the job.

because it turned out that the one who won as a mayor is an opposition.

____9. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his powerful speech titled, “ I Have A Dream”
because of the unjust treatment of black Americans in all over the land of America.

___10. Manuel is the youngest of all the employees in their company. His co-workers
always ask him to do some tasks and make some fool of him. Sometimes, they treat
Manuel as a kid and as the youngest employee, he just let it pass and focus on the job.
