Short Answer (24 marks)
Use the Following Matrices to answer questions 1 -3

The table below shows the three different ticket prices, in dollars, and the number of tickets sold for a
school concert.

Question 1
a. Construct a row matrix to represent the number of ticket sold for adults, children/students
and teachers respectively. (1 mark)

b. Using the matrix from Question 1 a, and an appropriate summing matrix, determine the total
number of tickets sold. Show all working. (2 marks)

c. Perform a matrix multiplication by hand to determine how much money the school will make,
in total, from the concert. Show all working. (3 marks)

Page 8
Question 2
For each of the matrices below, determine if the matrix product exists, and find its solution using your CAS
OR if the matrix product does not exist, explain why it does not. (2 + 2 = 4 marks)
a. b.

Does the matrix product exist?

a. b.

Matrix multiplication or explanation for why this cannot be completed.

a. b.

Question 3
Complete the following table for the given matrices, showing all working: (2 + 2 = 4 marks)

Matrix Determinant Inverse

A Det (A) A-1

B Det (B) B-1

Question 4
The energy content and amounts of fat and protein contained in each slice of bread and cheese and one
teaspoon of margarine is shown in the table below. (10 marks)

Pedro made toasted cheese sandwiches for himself and his friends for lunch.
The total amount of fat and protein (in grams) for each of the three foods — bread, cheese and margarine
— in the prepared lunch were recorded in the following matrix.

a. If the number of slices of bread Pedro used can be determined by the total fat content in the bread
divided by the fat content in one piece of bread, show that Pedro used 8 pieces of bread. (1 mark)

b. If each sandwich uses 2 pieces of bread, how many sandwiches did Pedro make? (1 mark)

c. How many slices of cheese did each sandwich have in it? Show all working. (2 marks)

Page 10
d. Using the information in part c, or another method, determine the value of x. Show all working.
(2 marks)

e. Construct a 1 x 3 matrix to represent number of slices of bread and cheese and servings of margarine
for each sandwich. (1 mark)

f. Hence, using matrix multiplication, find the total of fat and protein that each sandwich had. Show
how you have set up the multiplication and state clearly the amount of fat and protein you
calculated. (2 marks)

g. Show one way in which a matrix multiplication may be used to determine the total amount of fat and
protein that was in all the sandwiches. You only need to show how to set this up; you do not need to solve
the equation. (1 mark)

Extended Response (10 marks)
Year 10, 11 and 12 students at WeTeachGood High School have the option of purchasing a senior school
jacket. The senior school coordinator surveyed the senior students and recorded the percentage of
students who are interested in purchasing the optional jacket.

Matrix H shows the decimal percentage of male and female students for each year level who are interested
in purchasing the optional senior school jacket.

a. State the order of matrix H. (1 mark)

Matrix A represents the number of students in each year level.

A matrix multiplication is performed.

b. By referring to the matrix order, explain why the product matrix AH does not exist. (1 mark)

c. Show that . (2 marks)

Page 12
d. In the context of this problem, explain what the product matrix HA determines. (1 mark)

After seeing the jacket being worn by other students, there is a 10% increase in student interest in
purchasing the senior jacket. To represent this increase in student interest, matrix HA is multiplied by k.

e. Write down the value of k. (1 mark)

f. Using your value of k from question e evaluate to the nearest whole number. (1 mark)

To allow for new enrolments, the coordinator increases the school order for the jacket. She orders an
additional 5 male jackets and 8 female jackets.
A matrix sum is performed to determine the school’s jacket order.

(d) (i) Write the values of m and f. (1 mark)

(ii) Hence, evaluate the matrix sum and state the number of male and female jackets in the school’s
order. Give your answers correct to the nearest whole number. (2 marks)
