Risk Assessment: Ladders

Always Secure a ladder at the top and/or bottom. If this is not possible, another employee must hold
the ladder at the bottom

Never carry tools up and down a ladder in your hands, always use a tool belt.

Visually inspect ladders before use. All ladders must be inspected at least once a month by the
appointed ladder inspector and findings must be recorded on a register.

If a ladder is broken, it must be reported to your supervisor and the ladder must be removed from the
site for repairs or disposal.

Position the ladder so that the distance from its base to the wall is ¼ of the height of the ladder at its
resting point, creating a 75-degree angle.

Always use fiberglass or wooden ladders when working with or in close proximity to electricity

Your shoulders must always be in line with the ladder. Do not lean to the sides to reach.

Do not work on the top two steps of a ladder.

If you have any medical problems which may cause you to be dizzy, faint or fall from a ladder, e.g.
high blood pressure, Diabetes, epilepsy, etc. you may not work on a ladder.

If you are using any medication, over the counter or prescribed, which may cause dizziness or
drowsiness, you must report it to your supervisor before work commence.
