Dhaka University reopening after pandemic, health emergencies and our
preparedness
Dhaka University as well as all other educational institutions were shut down on March 17 of last
year to try to stop the spread of COVID-19. Exams and classes have been cancelled as a result of
the closure. This has caused havoc with academic schedules. Despite insufficient capacity, Dhaka
University's authorities chose to commence online academic activities in July of last year.
However, it was ineffective for those students who did not have any smartphones, a stable
network connection, or the capacity to purchase data in order to attend courses. Consequently,
teachers and students requested the reopening of dormitories, the resumption of courses, and
taking examinations as soon as possible while respecting health standards.
The students of Dhaka University are depressed because the university has been closed for
almost a year and a half. Some students may not have the financial means to deal with online
courses, while others do not have the necessary equipment to conduct classes and do not have
access to reliable networks. As a consequence, they were left feeling down and out. Suicide has
been rising alarmingly. As a result, maintaining social distance and adhering to health regulations,
students are demanding for the reopening of Dhaka University.
Dhaka University will reopen its dorms for resident students in their final year of honours
programs and Master’s in the first week of October on the basis of a priority system. These
students will sit for exams at that time. During the examinations, students will be permitted to
remain in the dorms for 15 days. Other honours students will be permitted to remain in dorms
and take examinations in later stages. By September 15, all resident students must have received
a double dose of Covid vaccination. The first dose of the Covid-19 vaccination must have been
obtained by students in order for them to be permitted to live in residential halls.
A lot of health hazards, including mental health, are apparent to me as a student of disaster
management. Health hazards are elements in our environment that are chemical, physical, or
biological in nature that may have a detrimental effect on our brief or long health. Touching,
breathing, and ingestion may all result in exposure. Understanding the dangers associated with
these hazards enables us to take preventative or mitigating action. Dhaka University is an
institution that has students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. According to our
expectations, the university will reopen shortly. Nevertheless, if students do not carefully follow
health rules, do not wear masks in the proper way, and do not keep a physical distance from one
another on campus, continue to gather here and there, just as they did before the corona
pandemic, they may be exposed to certain health hazards and might be affected by the
coronavirus. This will come as a shock to all of us. So, to maintain one's health, one must follow
the regulations set out by the DU authorities. . As a result of the pandemic, a lot of students are
dealing with mental depression. It is the responsibility of the authorities to organize a counseling
session for such pupils. It will be very beneficial to them.

After being closed for more than a year and a half, Dhaka University residential dorms are being
reopened to the only vaccinated students of master’s and honours final year under stringent
health restrictions. A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will be implemented for students
when the institution reopens its campus. In the SOP, accommodation, cleanliness, and medical
care are all addressed. No matter what, a floor bed cannot be put up by a residential student.
The room's surrounds should be maintained hygienic at all times. To increase awareness, banners
and festoons will be placed in dormitories and campus buildings on Covid-19. At the time of entry
and departure of the halls, students must wash their hands and when exiting rooms, students
are required to wear a mask. In addition, students should refrain from spitting in public areas and
avoid congested mosques and canteens at all costs. If a student has a chronic ailment, he or she
must notify the hall authority. A student who tests positive for Covid-19 will be quarantined in
the DU medical center. Students and faculty members must follow to a number of rules and
regulations.
Handwashing basins were placed at the doors of almost all residence halls, and repair and
remodeling work was in progress in many of them. All of the dorm's cafeteria, study rooms, and
restrooms facilities are being cleaned. The university's 19 residence halls accommodate an
enormous number of students, more than double their capacity. Due to the housing issue, many
first-year students have set up ground beds in big halls. The authorities have decided to remove
the so-called gana room, or common room, which has been a source of contention for quite some
time. Students will be assigned seats based on their academic performance. However, it is
unclear how the authorities would put this decision into effect, given that the institution is
experiencing acute housing shortages. The Dhaka University administration is now planning to
establish vaccination booths at the university's medical center on campus. To accommodate
Covid patients, 39 isolation chairs have already been set aside at the university's medical center.
Furthermore, sufficient preparations have been made in order for vaccine booths to be opened
at the center. The academic council proposed that all students be given masks with the
university's logo imprinted on them. Additionally, the academic council emphasized the need of
adhering to stringent health regulations after the university's reopening.
Our excitement at the reopening of our institution is well-founded. However, because of the
continuing corona pandemic, it is imperative that we adhere to all hygienic precautions. Regular
hand cleaning with an alcohol-based sanitizer or soap and water should be practiced. The
appropriate masks should be worn at all times. We should stay away from public areas and keep
a physical distance between ourselves.
The students of the University of Dhaka will return to their campus after a lengthy period of time.
The students will bring a positive spirit to the campus. Since the pandemic is still ongoing, we
should have it on our minds at all times. Students should follow to the health recommendations,
which include wearing masks and keeping social distance from one another. It is necessary to be
self-aware. The university's authority should be more helpful and supportive of its students. The
collaboration between students and those who have the power to enforce health standards on

campus will ensure that the campus is safe. The significant disruption to the academic schedule
created by the pandemic, particularly as a result of the prolonged closure, will not be made up
for simply by reopening the university. To deal with the losses, a comprehensive strategy should
be implemented as soon as possible.
