Would you consider buying a sax on Ebay?

Is there a way at all to check such a sax
and make sure iit is in the condition you
think it is? Anything to beware of?

Buying A Sax Off Of Ebay by Azuka.

Ebay is a much different experience today

than it was when I first learned of it in 1997.
Looking back, it's kind of amazing that it
survived all the blatant scams and
vulnerability of innocent buyers or sellers.

Today, it's a mixed bag. It's a fantastic

place for buyers, and not so great for
sellers. I've pretty much decided that eBay
really hates the little guys who are just
getting rid of a few things, or who are trying
to work it as a part-time self-employment
thing.

Due to the current environment, I am willing

to buy any sax up for sale (really, pretty
much ANY item) without worrying about
whether the seller will hold up his end or
not.

The reason for this is that buyers have to

be satisfied with the transaction. If you buy
a sax and believe it is 'not as described,'
then you submit a complaint and start a
claim. Ebay immediately takes the money
back from the seller. Generally, the buyer
must ship the item back, but once it arrives
you get your entire purchase and original
shipping payment back.

So, the risk for buyers is very low,

especially now. Just use reasonable
caution, and ONLY pay via PayPal.
Scammers do prey upon the unwary, but
just avoid any weird deals where they
require you to send the money by Western
Union or Moneygram, etc.

I'm very experienced with eBay purchases

and have made many. If it's a sax,
especially a vintage horn, I like to send the
seller a link to a page that shows how to
carefully and safely ship saxes. The biggest
error made by sellers is to fail to properly
protect the octave key post. They just don't
understand the importance of the neck
plug. Just google the following and you'll
see this excellent site - 'this old horn
packaging.'

This was the first result I got when googled

it: [Broken link]
The sellers' honesty is one side of my
worries about an Ebay buy. The other side
is simply the thought of trying the sax for
real before buying it. What if I get it, I try it
and I don't like it. I have no good reason to
send it back. Now what?
By the way, did you ever try to sell on Ebay
too?

One of the reasons NOT to buy a sax off of

ebay is when you have no clue what sort of
sax it is or what to expect it to sound like.

So, before deciding whether to buy a sax, I

make sure I understand why I'm buying it. I
am obsessed with saxes (and clarinets)
and have bought numerous instruments
over the years because I had heard or read
a lot about that particular model and I
thought the price was a good deal. Other
times, the sax was a mystery to me as well
as the seller, but had curious unique
features, or tremendous engraving and so
on.

If the seller was honest and I'm unhappy

with what I got, I never return it. I would
likely resell it, either on ebay or craigslist.

Sometimes I purchase a sax I don't want in

order to get the valuable mouthpiece I
spied in the auction. Occasionally, the
seller doesn't take proper packing
precautions and the mouthpiece gets
ruined during shipment, so I like to point out
the need to protect ALL the contents of the
case.

These days I never worry about the seller's

honesty because the buyer is SO WELL
protected! If they are dishonest I know I'll
get my money back, even if it is a 'no-
returns' policy auction. It is MUCH more fun
to be an eBay buyer than an eBay seller.
