PART 1: CONCEPT PAPER

Instructions: Create a concept paper about either of the topics below.

 new technology that utilizes magnets, or

 an existing technology with modified features that uses magnets.

The concept paper should contain the following details:

1. Explanation of the technology (name, parts, how does it work)

2. Purpose of the technology
3. Physics concept behind the technology (about Magnetism)

Follow the format on the next page. Do not forget to cite your resources in APA format. (Guide:

Name of the Technology
From the beginning of the space race, humans have been sending numerous satellites into space. These satellites have contributed significant
benefits to the human race since they paved the way to brand new discoveries in terms of cosmology, astronomy, meteorology, and even created the
way for mass telecommunication around the world. However, these satellites are not permanent. Since these satellites are way above human
intervention, they will not be subjected to human maintenance. Thus, when they are subjected to damages, they would be completely unfunctional.
These satellites will stay in orbit even though they do not serve a purpose any longer. These unfunctional satellites would fall into the classification of
space debris. As of 2020, there are about 28225 space debris currently in orbit, which are larger than about 5 cm to 1 m. If these space debris still
increase in number, the future of space exploration will not be possible. For the reason that these space debris may damage outgoing spacecraft,
killing the passengers in the process (The European Space Agency, 2020). Thereby, these space debris must be eliminated for the sake of today and
future space explorations. MagWay, a magnet specialized for this particular matter was created.

Since most of the satellites are made of metals, the basic properties of magnets will be significant for this technology: attraction and repulsion.
Attraction occurs when two unequal magnetic poles attract each other while repulsion occurs when two equal magnetic poles repel each other
(Supermagnete, n.d.).

A massive circular magnet is needed for this technology. The magnet will be given a set of rocket thrusters, which will enable the magnet to maneuver
and stabilize its position while in the Earth’s orbit.

When this technology is sent to Earth’s orbit, the properties of the magnet will start right away. Its repulsive force will repel metals back to the Earth’s
atmosphere. By this, those space debris will safely burn in the Earth’s atmosphere (Chow, 2021). Also, these space debris can be repelled to deep
space, leaving Earth’s orbit. Moreover, its attractive force will also beneficial. Some attracted metals will cling to the magnet. When the magnet meets
its full capacity, the magnet will be either sent back to the Earth’s atmosphere or into deep space using its rocket thrusters. If the magnet is sent back
to Earth, the space junk including the magnet will be safely burned in the Earth’s atmosphere. Otherwise, the space junk and the magnet will travel
into deep space, leaving Earth forever.

With MagWay, the future of space exploration will still be possible as it literally paves the way for satellites and space rockets.

PART 2: GENERALIZATION

Instructions: Using what you have learned from the discussions, activities, and articles, answer the essential question below.

Essential Question: How do magnets become useful?

We come into contact with magnets most of the time in the course of our daily lives. Magnets do an important role in a wide array of
devices such as simple toys, computers, credit cards, MRI machines and business equipments. Magnets range in size from barely-
visible specks to industrial monsters weighing tons. Though some are plainly visible, others are often tucked inside the inner workings
of appliances and other household, medical and commercial items, doing their job silently and unseen.

In computers and Electronics, many computers use magnets to store data on hard drives. This happened when Magnets alter the
direction of a magnetic material on a hard disk in segments that then represent computer data. Later, computers read the direction of
each segment of magnetic material to "read" the data.

In terms of Electric Power and Other Industries, magnets play a vita role in on generators by turning mechanical energy into electricity;
In recycling, electrically-powered magnets in cranes grab and move large pieces of metal; Mines use magnetic sorting machines to
separate useful metallic ores from crushed rock; In food processing, magnets remove small metal bits from grains and other food and
lastly,; In farming and agriculture, farmers use magnets to catch pieces of metal that cows eat out in the field. The cow swallows the
magnet with its food; as it moves through the animal’s digestive system it traps metal fragments.

In medical field specifically on medicines and health, magnets are used in medical equipment such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging
machines.

And in Home, though it may not be obvious, numerous homes contain many magnets such as refrigerator, pocket compass, dark
magnetic strip on the backside of a credit card, vacuum cleaners, blenders and washing machines all have electric motors that work by
magnetic principles. You’ll find magnets in phones, door bells, shower curtain weights and children's toys.

Magnets are essential to our everyday life since they are a fundamental material with most of the things we see around us.
