Verb Pattern

l) Subject + Linking Verb -be' + Subject Complement (Noun/Noun Phrase)


1. Sharma is a lecturer
2. Thought without action is abortion.
3. Happiness is an inner state of mind.
4. Mrs. Rao was a lawyer.
5. Action without thought is folly.
6. She was a nurse.
7. My parents were employees.
8. I am a student.

l b) Subject + Linking Verb -be' + Subject Complement (Adjective)


9. I am hard working
10. He is lazy.
11. They are brilliant.
12. The food is delicious.
13. The dish was hot.
14. She was kind.
ll) Subject + Linking Verb -'be'+ Complement of the verb
1. My pen is in the pocket
2. I am in my room.
3. The farmers are from a nearby village.
4. The market is beside the postoffice.
5. Glimpse of world history is in my library.
6. The bird is in the nest
7. The cat was under the bed.
8. The guest were in the hall.

lll) There + Linking Verb - 'be' + Subject + Complement of the verb


1. There are pictures in the book
2. There are quite enough people in India.
3. There will be no inner conflict in this matter.
4. There is no magic in this world.
5. There was a problem with the computer.
6. There are ants in the sugar.
7. There is a fire in the forest.
8. There is a lizard on the wall.
iv) Subject + Intransitive Verb + Any other expression
1. The sun rises in the east.
2. Ants move in a line.
3. Dogs bark when provoked
4. I walked around my desk.
5. The plants grow slowly.
6. Squirrels run fast.
7. He teaches nicely.
8. Some people travel frequently.

v) Subject + Transitive Verb + Object


1. The tiger killed a goat.

vi) Subject + have/has/had + Noun

vii) Subject + Transitive Verb + Indirect Obj'ect +direct Object


1.She wrote me a letter.
