CHAPTER I

Sentiments of Student Entrepreneurs

INTRODUCTION

As of today, one of the biggest problems in the Philippines is poverty, and

because of this, many of the students experience hardships in getting out of this

situation. We all know that one of the big factors that contribute to poverty in

Philippines is corruption, a problem that doesn't seem to end. Because of these

corruptions, funds are getting short for education and other important matters.

That is why some of the students are currently striving in order for them to meet

their own needs, through business and they are called as student entrepreneurs.

Where basically, student entrepreneurs are doing business and academic task

simultaneously and they are willing to take risk in order for them to make money.

Despite all of this, many student entrepreneurs are struggling while they are

doing their best just to sustain their needs, achieve independency and to finish

their study.

It has been suggested by some researchers that student entrepreneurs

are more challenged by doing multi-task in terms of their business and academic.

A study done by Robert Half (2019) stated that student entrepreneurs are

primarily task with developing and diversifying business so that the growth and

future of the business is guaranteed and the income will increase. Entrepreneurs

also need to enhance their high-level communication skills, the ability to self-
motivate, conflict resolution and developing growth strategies and plans for a

business. Due to high levels of activity over a sustained period of time, this often

results to stress. Mostly, student entrepreneurs feel pushed to brink, feel anxious

and overwhelmed because they are constantly engaged (Patel, 2018). Every

student entrepreneur gets a bucket of stress. They take each problem-solving as

a challenge and a project that needs to understand (Zinn, 2016).

As the researchers, we have the aim to give ideas, enlightenment, and

guidance to the people, especially to the students and readers of this research

on how a student entrepreneur run their business in spite of difficulties and on

how they overcome them. In addition, the researchers also aimed to encourage

people that following the path of an entrepreneur can be rewarding not only

financially, but also in terms of developing life skills such as negotiations, project

management, resilience, and imagination.

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to identify and

understand the sentiments and struggles that are experienced by the student

entrepreneurs and to get ideas on how did they overcome challenges of being a

student entrepreneur.

Although several studies give details on how a student entrepreneur

struggle a lot interconnected to their business just to make profit and provide

their own needs. Those researches focus and state more on how a student

entrepreneur struggle when it comes to business. However, no study has

sufficient analysis on how are student entrepreneurs pursue their tasks on

academic and busy business simultaneously in spite of all challenges that they

have been facing and how did this factors affect his/her studies. Furthermore, the

researchers would like to find out what are the challenges that are being faced by

a student entrepreneur and how did they overcome them. Thus, the researchers

seek to find answers to the following questions:

1. What are the sentiments of a student entrepreneur as they experienced

doing multi task both at academic and business?

2. What are the challenges that are usually experienced by student

entrepreneurs?

3. How do student entrepreneurs overcome their challenges of being an

entrepreneur and a student?
