1. Introduce the manufacture and its product briefly. Discuss its competitive
strategy (or strategies) and the tactics to achieve it (them).

Nike’s products are shoes ,hats and clothes. The Nike brand shoes are launched in 1972.

Nike formerly (1964 -1978) Blue Ribbon Sports, American sportswear company

headquartered in Beaverton, Oregon. It was founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill

Bowerman, a track-and-field coach at the University of Oregon, and his former student Phil

Knight. They opened their first retail outlet in 1966 and launched the Nike brand shoes in 1

972. The company was renamed Nike in 1978 and went public two years later. By the early
21st century , Nike had retail outlets and distributions in more than 170 countries, and its logo

;a curved check mark called the “ swoosh” was recognized throughout the world.

The Nike company has some strategies or tactics to face the competitors. From the late 1980s

Nike steadily expanded its business and diversified its product line through numerous

acquisitions. In 1996, the company created Nike ACG which markets products for extreme

sports such as snowboarding and mountain biking. Moreover, In the early 21st century , Nike

began selling sports-technology accessories, including portable heart-rate monitors and high-

altitude wrist compasses. Furthermore, Nike company produces Nike branded hats, sport

wears and water bottle nowadays and this made customers to pay more attention in Nike’s

products. Nike also advertise their products by successful famous athletes such as Michael

Jordan, Mia Hamm, Roger Federer, and Tiger Woods. The Nike-Town chain stores, the first

of which opened in 1990, pay tribute to these and other company spokespersons while

offering consumers a full range of Nike products.

2. Discuss how the modular design concept is applied to the product design.

Nike’s modularity is powerful. Nike has produced shoes made by fashion icons like

Virgil Abloah ( Off-White , Louis Vuitton ), music geniuses like Drake, Sports legends like

Michael Jordan. Nike frequently hires artists in their target demographic to build branding for

new products. For example, in 2017 they hired seven female artists to design their feminine

workout pants and shoes like illustrating with 20 colour and material options for the Uppers,

Eyestay ,Tips , Foxing , Tongues, and swooshes, etc. Nike has fit each customer to a

particular emotional connection by the immense creativity of celebrities and self-actualizing

creatives everywhere. Nike experiments on design by creating the modular systems that

allow the world’s highest achievers to plug their genius directly into a product.

Nike also created 3D CAD Model products. For examples, Nike has revealed their

newest , lightest, football cleat, the Nike Vapor laser Talon in 2013. Nike developed their

first cleat that features 3D-printed components in February 2013.Nike football debuted the

Nike Vapour Laser Talon that incorporates a revolutionary 3D printed plate that will help

football athletes perform at their best. The plate of the cleat is crafted using Selective Laser

Sintering technology (SLS) and is the sport’s first 3D printed plate. SLS is a manufacturing

technique using high-powered lasers to fuse small particles of materials into a 3-dimentional

shape. Though material selection, Nike was able to prototype a fully functional plate and

traction system within a fraction of the traditional timeframe and at a fraction of the weight.

good quality of its products.

Nike company always create a never-ending process of continuous improvement that covers

people, equipment ,suppliers ,materials and procedures. For example, Nowadays Nike has

produced not only footwears but also Nike branded stuffs like clothing, hats, water bottles,

basketballs and bags. The procedures focus organised with specific process. Such as design,

cutting, sewing, branding, packing etc. In addition, the company provide general purpose

equipment therefore they hire well skilled labour. The product process may high vary which

affect to complex planning and scheduling. Nike also has employee empowerment which is

giving employees a certain degree of autonomy and responsibility for decision-making

regarding their specific organisational tasks. Nike’s next concept is Benchmarking.

Benchmarking is a management technique for measuring performance or work by comparing

them in the market and are indicated by market leader company. Customer benchmarking is

is an understanding of customers . Product quality, price, customer service and delivery

speed are all the views of overall customer. The higher level of customer satisfaction will

make the company’s position getting stronger. Nike as a brand that is reliable and has very

high performance. Therefore, good quality makes the Nike growing rapidly.
