Subject: Science

Grade Level: Grade 8

Objective: Describe the conditions under which two forces balance.

Learning across the curriculum:

1. Math - Students can calculate the resultant force when two balanced forces act on
an object.

2. Physics - Students can explore the concept of equilibrium and how it relates to
balanced forces.

3. Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) - Students can design and construct a
simple balance using everyday materials.

Elicit:

- Ask students if they have ever experienced pushing or pulling an object and feeling
it resist.

Engage:

1. Show a short video clip demonstrating balanced forces. Translate to English:

2. Conduct a class discussion on examples of balanced forces in everyday life.

3. Pose a scenario where two opposing forces are applied to an object and ask
students to predict what will happen. Translate to English: Magbigay ng isang
mangyayari.

Activity 1: Balancing Forces with Springs

Materials: Springs, weights, ruler, stand

Instructions:

1. Hang a spring from a stand.

2. Attach different weights to the spring and observe how the spring stretches.

3. Find the weight that balances the spring, where it neither stretches nor
compresses.

4. Record the weights and their corresponding lengths of the spring.

Rubrics:

- Criteria: Accuracy of recording weights and lengths, understanding of balanced

forces

- Points: 10

Assessment questions:

1. What happens to the spring when a weight is added?

2. How can you determine the weight that balances the spring?

Activity 2: Tug of War

Materials: Rope, markers, stopwatch

Instructions:

1. Divide the class into two teams.

2. Mark a line on the ground as the center point.

3. Each team pulls the rope in opposite directions.

4. Measure the time it takes for the teams to reach a point of balance, where the
rope is not moving.
Rubrics:

- Criteria: Time measurement accuracy, understanding of balanced forces

- Points: 10

Assessment questions:

1. What happens when both teams exert equal force on the rope?

2. How can you determine the point of balance in a tug of war?

Activity 3: Equilibrium Mobile

Materials: Strings, cardboard, scissors, paper clips, weights

Instructions:

1. Cut cardboard into different shapes.

2. Attach strings to the shapes and hang them from a horizontal string.

3. Add weights to each shape until the mobile is balanced.

4. Observe how the shapes move when out of balance and when in balance.

Rubrics:

- Criteria: Creativity of mobile design, understanding of balanced forces

- Points: 10

Assessment questions:

1. What happens to the mobile when the weights on each shape are balanced?

2. How can you adjust the weights to achieve equilibrium in the mobile?

Explain:
1. Teacher explains the concept of balanced forces using diagrams and real-life

2. Teacher facilitates a class discussion to deepen understanding and address any

misconceptions.
pagkaunawa.

Elaborate:

1. Students work in pairs to create a poster illustrating different scenarios of

balanced forces.
balanseng pwersa.

2. Students research and present examples of balanced forces in nature, such as

the equilibrium of ecosystems or the balance of predator-prey relationships.

Evaluate:

1. Conduct a written quiz assessing students' understanding of balanced forces and

their ability to apply the concept to different scenarios. Translate to English:
iba't ibang senaryo.

2. Observe students' participation and engagement during class activities. Translate

Extend:

- Organize a field trip to a local playground or park where students can observe and
analyze different forces at play, including balanced forces. Translate to English:

Assignment:
Ask students to write a reflection paper discussing the importance of
understanding balanced forces in various aspects of life, such as engineering,
sports, and environmental conservation.
kalikasan.
