Cycle 4: Force and Motion Unit Plan

Start to End Date (February 1 - March 18)

Desired Results--What do we want students to know and do?

Standard(s):
● 8-PS2-4: Construct and present arguments using evidence to support the claim that gravitational
interactions are attractive and depend on the masses of interacting objects
● 8-PS3-1: Construct and interpret graphical displays of data to describe the relationships of kinetic
energy to the mass of an object and to the speed of an object

Science and Engineering Practices

● SEP.3: Planning and Carrying Out Investigations- Students are working toward conducting an
investigation and evaluating the accuracy of different methods for collecting data
● SEP.6: Constructing Explanations and Designing Solutions- Students are working toward
constructing a scientific explanation based on valid and reliable data
● SEP.7: Engaging in Argument from Evidence- Students are working toward making an oral or
written argument based on evidence and scientific reasoning

Disciplinary Core Ideas

● PS2.A: Forces and Motion- Students are working toward understanding that the mass of an
object will have an effect on the extent of motion when a force is applied to the object
● PS3.A: Definitions of Energy- Students are working toward understanding that energy may be
in the form of kinetic energy or potential energy
● PS3.C: Relationship Between Energy and Forces- Students are working toward understanding
that when objects collide, each one exerts a force on the other

Crosscutting Concepts:
● CCC.4: Systems and Systems Model- Students are working toward using models to show the flow
of energy and matter within and between systems
● CCC.7: Stability and Change- Students are working toward realizing that changes in one part of a
system might cause large changes in another part

Assessment(s)
● Common Formative Assessments: 2/9-10/22, 2/23-24/22,
● Summative Assessment:
