Earth's Place in the Universe: Solar System and the Universe

Desired Results--What do we want students to know and do?

Essential Standard(s)-
MS-ESS1-2: Develop and use a model to describe the role of gravity in the motions within the galaxies
and the solar system

MS-ESS1-3: Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system

Learning Target(s)/Objective(s) in Student Friendly Language-

● Analyze data to compare and contrast solar system objects based on their characteristics (color, size,
motion, ability to sustain life, geographical features, etc.)
● Describe how technology is used to detect electromagnetic radiation and produce images in order to
provide information about the universe
● Classify stars based on their physical characteristics of absolute brightness, color, and the role gravity
plays in the formation of stars
● Learn the theory behind the formation of the universe and apply scientific notation as a means for
scientists to measure the vastness of the universe.
