DISTANCE, DISPLACEMENT AND FINAL POSITION

I. Objectives:
a. To learn and perform measurement of distance and displacement
b. To be able to calculate the per cent error between the estimated value and
measured value.

II. Materials needed for the Experiment:

a. Measuring Stick/Tape Measure/Ruler or any Instruments that can perform
distance measurement.
b. Compass (either real compass or an app in the phone) or any instrument that can
determine the direction.
c. Any big stone, bottle, bag that can be used as a marker.

III. Approximate Measurement used:

a. Value used for estimation:
i. 1 step = 3 ft
ii. 1m = 3.28 ft
iii. 1 m = 100 cm
b. Use the unit cm in actual measurements

IV. Procedure:
a. Pick a spot that you like (preferably in a spacious area) and stand on it with a
compass on your hands. Face towards EAST using your compass as your guide
b. Mark this spot using a bottle or any object that can be easily identified. This will
be our origin.
c. Walk 12 STEPS forward and then stop. Mark your ending spot with any object
that can be used as a marker. Using your measurement instrument, measure the
amount of distance you have walked. Write the distance measured here:
_________ cm.
d. From your last position, use your compass and face towards NORTH and then
walk 7 STEPS and then stop. Mark your stopping point with another marking
object preferably a bottle. Using your measurement instrument, measure the
amount of distance you have walked. Write the distance measured here:
_________ cm.
e. From that latest point, once again use your compass and face toward WEST and
then walk 5 STEPS and then stop. Mark your stopping point with another
marking object preferably a bottle. Using your measurement instrument, measure
the amount of distance you have walked. Write the distance measured here:
_________ cm.
f. After that, using your measuring instrument  measure the distance between the
FINAL PONTS and the STARTING POINT. This will be your displacement.
Write the distance measured here: __________ cm. (This is your MEASURED
DISPLACEMENT)
g. Measure how many steps the displacement is by COUNTING the STEPS from
the ORIGIN TO FINAL POSITION. Write the number of steps here:
_________ Steps. (This is your ESTIMATED DISPLACEMENT)
h. We need to measure the ANGLE of the displacement. Stand on the ORIGIN
again and using your compass measure the ANGLE formed between the EAST
and the DISPLACMENT LINE. Write the angle here: ________.
i. Plot your measurement on the grid provided in next page.

Plot your MEASURED VALUES here with the ORIGIN at the BLACK CIRCLE. One squre in the
graph is about 1 meter.

Per cent Error: (ALWAYS REMEMBER TO USE ONLY ONE TYPE OF UNIT IN YOUR
CALCULATIONS  for example: convert all units calculated above into meters)

|Measured Value−Estimated Value|

% of Erro r= x 100 %
Measured Value

Calculate the % of Error of your measured and estimated values using the given formula above:

(DON’T WORRY IF THE ERROR IS BIG OR SMALL, IT ONLY REFLECTS THE

ACTIONS THAT YOU HAVE MADE IN THE EXPERIMENT)

Total Estimated Displacement (Steps): Total Measured Displacement (cm):

Per cent Error: (ALWAYS REMEMBER TO USE ONLY ONE TYPE OF UNIT IN YOUR
CALCULATIONS)

Measured Value

Calculate the % of Error of your measured and estimated values using the given formula above:

Observation: (Discuss how the different the measured and estimated values are)

Analysis/Evaluation: (Discuss what are the probable causes of the error in the experiment and
what would you do to prevent or mitigate such errors from occurring again?)
