Think GAIA - the environmental philosophy of SANYO

Environmental sustainability and “Think GAIA”

In the latter part of the last century, mankind’s pursuit of convenience and
material comforts left indelible marks on the earth, such as global warming
and environmental destruction. SANYO has always had a strong environmental
focus. However, in 2005 we took that a stage further and based our whole
corporate philosophy on the concept of “Think GAIA”. Under this vision
SANYO has committed to using global resources and skills to develop
solutions for a sustainable coexistence on earth.
What is “Think GAIA”?
“GAIA”, originally the mythological goddess of the Earth, is a concept rapidly
gaining momentum today. Based around the belief that living organisms on the
earth affect the nature of their environment, the concept of “GAIA” was first
proposed in 1979 by the English scientist James Lovelock, who participated
in NASA’s Mars exploration programme during the 1960s. Lovelock proposed
the idea of earth as a living, green organism where mankind and all living
things live in harmony. His recent book “The Revenge of GAIA” serves as a
wake-up call and has sparked much public debate.

SANYO - committed to developing environmental technologies

At SANYO actions speak louder than words. We are dedicated to incorporating the “Think GAIA” ethos throughout our
business - an example of this is our Solar Ark, which is the world’s largest solar power generator with over 5000 cells,
used to supply one of our production plants.

“Think GAIA” has also been the driving force behind many environmentally sustainable products that are already
widely available, including:

• ECOi Electric VRF systems - we have developed some of the most energy-efficient and reliable products in the industry.

• Gas driven VRF system - providing an energy-efficient solution that delivers a reduced carbon footprint.

• Virus washer - suppresses 99% of airborne viruses from treated air including common cold, flu and avian flu. Now available as
a free-standing unit, it will soon be available in air conditioning systems.

• Solar powered air-conditioners - set to revolutionise the air conditioning industry.

World-leading innovators
The “Think GAIA” concept is driving environmentally sustainable product development throughout the whole SANYO corporation,
including the eneloop battery, which can be recharged 1000 times and has a solar charger, and the revolutionary AQUA washing
machine, which uses ozone rather than detergent as well as recycling its water.

SANYO GHP - the natural choice

The SANYO GHP uses HFC-type refrigerant

and clean-burning natural gas for high-effi-
ciency operation. Since it is designed to work
with existing piping, the SANYO GHP offers
an easy way to renew old air-conditioning sys-
tems. It is a high-performance machine that is
economical to run and maintain.

The outdoor unit uses an

automobile engine for high
efficiency.

Environmental

High efficiency operation

All models are equipped with a high performance air
exchanger and a newly developed refrigerant/heat
exchanger for high efficiency operation.
Helps prevent global warming
High efficiency operation reduces emissions of carbon
dioxide (CO2), the major cause of global warming.
SANYO GHP uses the new R410A refrigerant

Up to 40% reduction of nitrogen oxide

(NOx) emissions
With a lean burn combustion system that relies on air-
fuel ratio feedback control, the SANYO GHP reduces NOx
emissions by as much as 40%.

Powerful Cooling and Heating

Power supply problems?

If you are short of electrical power, gas heat pumps
could be the perfect solution.
• Runs on gas and just needs single phase supply.
• Enables the building’s electrical power supply to be
used for other critical electrical demands.
• Reduces capital cost to upgrade power sub stations
to run heating and cooling systems.
• Reduces power loadings within a building especially
during peak periods.
• Electricity supply freed up for other uses such as IT
servers, commercial refrigeration, manufacturing,
lighting etc.

Economical Comfort

Resin mount construction

As an industry first, we use a resin mount instead of anti-
vibration rubber to absorb engine vibration. The resin mount
suppresses engine startup vibration as well as reducing the
vibration transmitted to the unit structure while the engine is
running, so it helps reduce operating noise.

mains gas or LPG as its main power source, and single-phase
electricity for start-up and fan operation. It provides the ideal
solution for operators facing a shortfall in power. Due to its
advanced technology and design SANYO GHP requires no
defrost cycle, which enables it to provide continuous 100%
heating performance even in severe weather conditions with
an outside temperature as low as -20°C, while consuming
less gas and electricity than comparable air conditioning
systems. This was obviously a huge benefit when considering
the correct system for the hotel.
Sheraton Fota Island Hotel, Golf Resort and Spa, is twenty
minutes drive east from Cork, with 131 rooms, and a further
280 lodges are in development in the grounds. The spa’s
features include a pool and well-designed gym, 18 treatment
rooms and hydrotherapy suite. The nearby Fota Wildlife Park
offers visitors the experience of seeing giraffes roaming the
Irish landscape.

Hot Water Supply Function *Hot water capacity will vary depending on cooling load.
*Hot water is also available during heating when ambient temperature is
SGP-E120/150/190/240K1GU2W higher than 7˚C.
System Advantage
The engine waste heat, which is normally exhausted into
the atmosphere, is recovered via the heat exchanger and
effectively used as hot water, so the GHP Chiller acts as a
sub-system that alleviates the load on the client’s main hot GHP
water system and therefore offers ‘free’ hot water. SANYO

The length of the suspension bolts should be selected so that there

is a gap of 30 mm from the ceiling (17 mm or more below the lower
surface of the main unit), as shown in the figure above. If the
suspension bolts are too long, it will contact the ceiling panel and
the unit cannot be installed.

DR Type Concealed Duct
• High static pressure, low-noise design
25-48 Type 76-96 Type
Embedded ceiling type with high static pressure and
excellent low operating sound features. As the discharge
port also can be set freely, it is suitable for office space.
• RAP valve kit
Except for use as a single system, two Rap valve kits are
required for each unit for the type 76 and the type 96.

Single system • “Short duct” use of the DR Type

When the DR Type is used with a short duct (duct length of
4 to 5 m, external static pressure around 49 Pa (5 mm Aq),
the air volume and the operating sound may be too high
and an air volume damper or similar should be installed. The
external static pressure for this model is 147 Pa (15 mm Aq)
Double system or more. In such a case, we recommend that you consider
an alternative indoor unit.

Check the room limit concentration

With a multi-type system, the total length of refrigerant tubing is longer, and more additional refrigerant charge is
required. For this reason, there is a danger that refrigerant leaking into a small room may cause persons in the room
WARNING to be asphyxiated. The room limit concentration is determined as follows according to the “Installation Standards
for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Equipment (KHK-S0010)” voluntary standards created by the High Pressure
Gas Safety institute of Japan.
Total amount of refrigerant charge (kg) for the system Limit concentration 0.44 kg/m3
Smallest room volume (m3) where an indoor unit is installed
No special measures are required if the concentration is below 0.41 km/m3 (EN378).
However, special measures are required if the concentration is above 0.44 km/m3.

“Maintenance and inspection” is a must for gas heat pump air conditioning systems.
Just like an automobile, a heat pump air-conditioning system requires periodic servicing so that it can perform efficiently.
Main maintenance and inspection items
Maintenance and inspection Since a heat pump air-conditioning system
uses a gas engine as its power source, it 1 Changing the engine oil

recommended.
• Features of Heat Pump Heating
Heating power (kW) indicated in the catalogue is based on the
following conditions: outdoor temperature of 7˚C and indoor
temperature of 20˚C, as specified by JIS. Heating capacity decreases
as outdoor temperature drops. Therefore, if heating power is
insufficient due to low outdoor temperature, use the air conditioner
together with other heating equipment. When heated air rises and
collects in a room with a high ceiling, install an air circulator as well.

Do not install an air conditioner in a room where the limit density will be exceeded if refrigerant
leaks. The refrigerant used by this system is itself a safe refrigerant; however, if for some reason the
refrigerant leaks and the limit density is exceeded, there is a risk of injury to persons due to a lack of
oxygen. For further information, ask your dealer or consult references such as an engineering manual
and install the airconditioner correctly.
