AN UNDERSTANDING ABOUT ADJECTIVE CLAUSE USING PAPER MADE BY

STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT 2017-B STKIP PGRI JOMBANG

Abstract
The aim of this research is to analysing how the understanding about adjective clause
in students of English Department 2017-B STKIP PGRI Jombang. We will answer the
question is there an understanding about adjective clause in 2017-B class at STKIP PGRI
Jombang? And how far an understanding about adjective clause in 2017-B class at STKIP
PGRI Jombang. From this research will measure the percentage of understanding about
adjective clause by using formula that we applied. The population is the students of English
Department 2017-B that made the paper for grammatical material presentation, and it will be
our sample in this research. From the discussion and result we conclude that there is still a
lack of understanding in adjective clause.

INTRODUCTION
Every complex sentence include two clauses that is dependent clause and independent
clause. Dependent clause is clauses that can’t stand alone in a complex sentence. There is a
clause which function is to modify the noun or pronoun in independent clause. Those clause
named as relative clause or popular as adjective clause. To make simple, in adjective clause
we able to combine two sentences into one. The characteristic of adjective clause is begin
with words such as that, when, where, who, whom, whose, which, and why. According to
trask (1999:3) said that adjective clause may be added with prefix or suffix in the adjective
form. From the theory above we know that adjective clause must be includes the adjective
words. In bachelor’s degree actually for 5th semester we have a study of grammar that
includes adjective clause, for example in English class of 2017-B. therefore we want to
analyse whether the students of 2017-B already understand the material for adjective clause.
We will analyse it by using the papers that made by them to present the material of grammar
which there is an adjective clause.

RESEARCH QUESTION
Based on the background, we conclude that the problem of this research are:

1. Is there an understanding about adjective clause in 2017-B class at STKIP PGRI


Jombang?
2. How far an understanding about adjective clause in 2017-B class at STKIP PGRI
Jombang?

METHODOLOGY OF RESEARCH
In this research, we applied about qualitative research method. This method is used to
learn an understanding about adjective clause in English Department of 2017-B. the
population is students of English Department in 2017-B and three papers were made as a
sample group. We analyse grammar paper which we will present with a formula. The formula
is:
Total of correct sentences x 100%
Total of the sentences

RESULT AND DISCUSSION


Paper 1. Parallel Structure

Based on the discussion above, we know that not all students of English Department
2017-B of STKIP PGRI Jombang understand about adjective clauses. They use the
characteristic of adjective clause (who, that, whom, which, etc.) regardless of their function.
There are some students’ who interpret all the functions are the same, when in fact they are
not.

From paper 1 about parallel structure they have 100% for the result so they’re more
understand about adjective clause. From paper 2 about Restrictive and Non-Restrictive they
have 100% for the result so they’re more understand about adjective clause. And from paper
3 about Introduction to Complex Syntactic Structure they have 50 % for the result so they’re
understand about adjective clause.
CONCLUSION
Based on our discussion and result, we conclude that not all of students in English
Department of 2017-B in STKIP PGRI Jombang understanding about adjective clause. From
group 1 they have 100%, group 2 100%, and the last group is 50%. What they don’t
understand is about the use or function of characteristics in adjective clause like that, who,
whom, whose, which, and others. In addition, there is still a lack of understanding in
adjective clause.
