CHAPTER 1

The Problem and Its Background

I. Introduction

Bullying is defined as aggressive behavior that is typically marked by

repetition and an imbalance of power. It has become a global issue, and in some
cases, the victims may suffer long-term implications. Bullying can take many forms,
including physical, verbal, and cyberbullying. Physical bullying is the use of physical
actions to frighten and control a target, whereas verbal bullying is when an individual
uses verbal language to intimidate and control a target. And then, cyberbullying
includes sharing personal or private information about another person that causes
embarrassment.

Moreover, bullying behavior declines a student’s progress through the grades.

School bullying is associated with numerous physical, mental, and social detriments.
A relationship also exists between student’s bullying behavior and school issues as
well as academic achievement, school bonding, and absenteeism.

According to Republic Act. No. 10627, an act requiring all elementary and
secondary schools to adopt policies to prevent and address the acts of bullying in
their institutions. This act shall be known as the “Anti- Bullying Act of 2013”. The
purpose of this Act “bullying” shall refer to any severe or repeated use by one or
more students of a written, verbal, or electronic expression, or a physical act of
gesture, or any combination. In addition to this as stated by the Guidance Counselor
in Buenavista National High School that 101 students have experienced any kind of
bullying.

The researchers want to know the effect of bullying on their academic

performance. This study aims to raise awareness among all students and to assist in
cases of bullying in the school. To inform all students of the impact of their actions.

II. Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the effects of bullying on students’ academic

performance in Buenavista National High School.
Specifically, it will seek to answer the following questions:

1. What kind of bullying you encountered?

2. What are the effects of bullying on students’ academic performance?

3. How do students able to cope up bullying?

III. Significance of the Study

The researchers believe that this study will not only yield data that will be
helpful to them, more so to the group of the following people:

School Head. Assess the students regarding bullying.

Guidance Counselor. Help students to develop social and emotional skills.

Teachers. To provide help and advice to students who are being bullied and to those
who have an intent to bully.

Parents. Is to aware the behavior of their child in school.

Students. For them able to minimize their actions in regards bullying.

Other Researchers. The researchers expected that this study would be valuable to
new researchers as it might assist with further research.

IV. Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study will focus on cases of bullying and its effect on academic
performance. Five (5) senior high school students from Buenavista National High
School in Matabao, Buenavista, Agusan del Norte, were selected as the participants
of the study. This research will be conducted during school year 2022-2023.
CHAPTER 2

Conceptual Framework and Review of Related Studies

This chapter presents the relevant literature and studies that the researchers
considered in strengthening the importance of the present study. It also presents the
synthesis of the art to fully understand the research for better comprehension of the
study.

I. Conceptual Framework

Independent Variable Dependent Variable

Academic Performance of
Senior High Students in
Bullying
Buenavista National High
School

This study utilizes the Independent variable (IV) and Dependent Variable (DV)
Model. The independent variable is consists of Bullying. This acts as the potential
predictors of the outcome under dependent variable.

The dependent variable is consisting Academic Performance. The outcome

variable is dependent on the bullying and the learning styles of the respondents. The
possible relationship of Independent Variable (IV) and Dependent Variable (DV) is
explored.

II. Review of Related Studies

Bullying is considered as a general problem in today's generation. According

to (Peter K. Smith & Paul Brain 2020), bullying is also described as aggressive
behavior normally characterized by repetition and imbalance of power. It may be
considered as a normative and many group settings, but socially unacceptable within
the ethos of a democratic society. (Masaki Matsunaga 2019), It is a specific form of
social aggression characterized by intentional, repeated, and unilateral enactment of
harm doing in school settings. However, as stated by (Jan & Hausin 2018), The
behavior has common characteristics, which include intentionality, repeatability, and
power imbalance. In the school context, bullying involves physical and verbal
assaults together with harassment towards a victim by an individual or group of
students over a prolonged period.

Based on (Joseph A. Drake, James H. Price, & Susan K. Telljohann 2021),

prevention of school bullying should become a priority issue for schools. The most
effective methods of bullying with reduction involve a whole school approach. This
method includes assessing the problem, planning school conference days, providing
belter supervision at recess, forming a bullying prevention coordinating group,
encouraging parent- teacher meetings, establishing classroom rules against bullying,
holding classroom about bullying, requiring talks with the bullies and victims, and
scheduling talks with the parents of involved students. Additionally, many young
children were perhaps given premature access to technology with inadequate
support or supervision as schools hurriedly moved to virtual educational activities and
parents simply needed to survive the extended time children at home. On the other
hand, we have long known that bullying online is often connected to bullying at
school and therefore if you were students at schools might translate to fewer
problems online (Justin W. Patchin 2021).

III. Definition of Terms

The following are the terminologies used in this research:

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE. The measurement of student achievement across

various academic subjects.

BULLYING. The behavior of a person who hurts or frightens someone.

DIFFICULTIES. The challenges facing the students in regards bullying.

GPA. The calculation of their average grade or result.

STUDENTS. Denoting someone who is studying at school.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

I. Research Method

This study will employ a qualitative research method. A qualitative research is

a type of research that aims to gather and analyze non- numerical data in order to
gain an understanding of individuals' social reality, including understanding their
attitudes, beliefs, and motivation. This method is not only about “what” people think
but also “why” they think so. It is believed that this is very much suitable in this study.

II. Research Design

The research design that will be utilized in this study is phenomenology.

Phenomenology studies conscious experience as experienced from the subjective or
first person point of view. This research design is appropriate because it will describe
the lived experiences of Senior High School students who are being bullied.

III. Participants of the Study

The participants of this study are the Senior High School students in
Buenavista National High School. They were chosen as participants because they
are one of the victims of bullying. The participants are grade 11 students who felt
being bullied instead of having a unity with others.

IV. Sampling Procedure

The sampling procedure that will be employed in this study is purposive

sampling. A purposive sampling enables researchers to squeeze a lot of information
out of the data that they have collected. This sampling procedure is essential
because it can provide researchers with the data to make other types of
generalizations from the sample being studied. They are five important steps
involved in establishing a purposive sample. First, identify your research question.
Second, clarify the population and sample characteristics. Then, employing a suitable
method, gather your data. Finally, look into and interpret your findings.

V. Research Instrument

The instrument being use by the researchers in this study is interview. It is the
research instrument where meeting of people face to face, especially for
consultation. This research instrument is to market your skills and relevant
experience to the interviewer and to evaluate the organization’s appropriateness for
you. To ensure the validity of instruments there needs to be a one-to-one
correspondence between interview questions asked and underlying competency.

VI. Data Gathering Procedure

This study will do the following steps in data gathering procedure:

The first step is to obtain permission from the principal. Second, get approval
from the participants. Third, perform the interview in which you will collect the data for
your study. Finally, compile all of the information received from your participants so
that it may be analyzed and interpreted.
CHAPTER 4
