ABSTRACT
This study investigated the prevalence of ectoparasites infestation in sheep and goats sold in
some Market Makurdi. The study revealed overall incidence rates of 47% and 43% in goats and
sheep and respectively with no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the two. This finding
suggested that sheep and goats are equally susceptible to the identified ectoparasites in this
study. Infestation of sheep and goats by ticks, lice, and fleas were common in Makurdi. The high
distribution of ectoparasites infesting the sheep and goats in this study indicated that no
appropriate and strategic control measurements applied by animal health service. And also,
regarding to animals movement and quarantine are not strictly enforced. Sanitary conditions,
adequate nutrition and proper housing should be provided for sheep and goats to reduce
infestation to an economic level.
