The SAMR model is a framework that categorizes four different degrees of classroom technology
integration.

1. Substitution – Direct substitution of material or process but there is no change when it comes to
its function. A great example for this is when students create their outputs, instead of using
pen/pencil and paper, they switch to using Microsoft Word.
2. Augmentation – Direct substitution of material or process but now there is also improvements
that are being introduced. The previous example shows the switching from pen/pencil to
Microsoft Word, in order to make it augmentation, the students may use the text-to-speech
function of MS word when creating their outputs.
3. Modification – This is where technology allows to redesign the task to suit a new purpose. So,
after doing the previous example students can now share their work in order to receive feedbacks
in improving their papers.
4. Redefinition – Allows the use of technology to create new task to convey concepts. Instead of
making a paper for their outputs, students can now create videos or animations that will present
what they want to wrote on the paper.

In the first two degrees of classroom technology integration, the process is simply enhanced and serves its
original purpose, whilst the other two transforms the tasks to serve a different purpose.

SAMR model gives helpful insight about including technology to ensure collaboration amongst student. It
helps to increase engagements and maintains inter-connectivity amongst peers.
