1. Who is Greta Thunberg?
- Greta Thunberg is the daughter of Malena Ernman, and Svante Thunberg, who was
the descendant of Svante Arrhenius, a scientist who came up with a model of the
greenhouse effect, and was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1903. Greta
was a 17-year-old girl who was born in Sweden. Way back when she was 15 years
old, she won a climate change essay competition in a local newspaper. Three months
after she won, Greta start joining protesting. In 2019, she decided to sacrifice the
whole school year to continue campaigning, to attend key climate conferences, and to
join student protests around the world. Greta refused to fly with a plane, instead she
took a 2-week travel with a racing yacht as it would emit less pollution. She
successfully represented the youth as she delivered her speech during the climate
change summit.
2. What is her speech about?
- During her speech, Greta burst out on world leader for their “betrayal” for the youth
because of their lack of effort to deliver ambitious new commitments to address the
danger of global warming. “You are still not mature enough to tell it like it is. You
are failing us. But the young people are starting to understand your betrayal.” In
addition, Greta predicted that the agenda would not make a significant difference in
cutting off greenhouse effect.
3. What’s the occasion?
- On September 23, 2019, the occasion was the United Nations Climate Action
Summit, held at New York City. The Summit showcased a leap in collective national
political ambition and demonstrated massive movements in the real economy in
support of the agenda.
4. How has her speech achieved a particular effect?
- With her young age, she was able to communicate with other people with advocacy.
Greta became an inspiration to the leaders and other youth to do their part in order to
save the environment regardless of their age. Thunberg’s speech was very emotional
and grounded in science. It put a shame on leaders because of not acting urgently to
save the planet.
