BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Cleaning your computer system is essential to extend its life and keep your stored
important data and files safe. Before starting your cleaning activity, make sure that you have all
the necessary tools and materials.

Cleaning Tools is a variety of necessary and vital tools and products created and
designed in various materials to meet a cleaning need and used to clean easily, effectively, and
efficiently.

1. Lint-free Cloth (Microfiber Cloth) - used to swipe different computer components

without scratching or leaving debris.
2. Compressed Air - used to blow away dust and debris from different computer parts
without touching the components.
3. Air Blower - is a machine used for generating flow of air at substantial pressure to blow
away dust and debris.
4. Cleaning Solution - mixture of water and alcohol to disinfect and clean the surface of
the device.
5. Brush - a tool made of bristles set in a handle and used for cleaning, smoothing, or
painting.
6. Cable Ties - used to bundle cables neatly inside and outside of a computer.
7. Parts Organizer - used to hold screws, jumpers, fasteners, and other small parts and
prevents them from getting mixed together.

Note: You may also need some hand tools to open and pry the equipment for cleaning.

Keyboard

A filthy keyboard can lead to different issues such as stuck, jammed, or stuttering keys
and malfunctioning. This device is open-faced that can catch particles such as dust, food debris,
and other small dirt and grease particles. Which can accumulate and stick on the keys or inner
crevices of the keyboard casing.

Tools: Microfiber cloth, cleaning solution (alcohol or water), and brush or air blower or
compressed air.

Safety Precautions:

• Do not spray any liquid directly onto the keyboard or casing, it may zip into the crevices
and damage the board. Use a damp microfiber or lint-free cloth and wipe the surface
and cord gently.
• If you are using a mechanical keyboard, just remove the keycaps and wash it with clean
water. And bush the debris left behind on the casing or use an air blower.

Mouse

Dust and grease can easily accumulate in the mouse due to being one of the most used
peripheral devices. Dirty surfaces are also one of the common causes of problem with the
mouse sensors lens which can cause erratic mouse movements.

Tools: Microfiber cloth, cleaning solution (alcohol or water), and cotton swab.

Safety Precautions:

• Do not spray any liquid directly onto the sensors lens to prevent damage. And use a
damp microfiber or lint-free cloth and wipe the surface and cord gently.

LCD/LED/AMOLED Monitor

A dirty monitor screen can add additional eye strain when viewing on the screen for an
extended period. This device can easily get dust, dirt, and other airborne particles onto it due to
the static electricity it can produce. Fingerprints can also add up to it, in addition screens are
very susceptible to scratches that can cause additional damage.

Tools: Microfiber or lint-free cloth and non-alcohol-based cleaning solution.

Safety Precautions:

• Unplugging your monitor from the socket to avoid the risk of electric shock.
• Use microfiber or lint-free cloth when cleaning or wiping the screen, other cloth could
cause scratches and damage on to the screen.
• Do not spray any liquid directly on the screen. Use a damp microfiber or lint-free cloth
and wipe the surface gently.

Chassis
Alternatively referred to as the computer case and sometimes referred to as the system
unit or tower. The chassis is the housing that helps protect and organize all the components
that make up a desktop computer. Over time, dust and airborne particles can accumulate
outside the system unit. When these particles and grease build up for a long time, it can corrode
the paint and cause rust to the metal parts.

Tools: Screwdriver, anti-static mat and strap, tweezers, brush, microfiber cloth, and air blower
or compressed air.
Safety Precautions:

• Always power off and unplug the system unit from the power source before working on
it to avoid the risk of electric shock.

• Use an anti-static mat and strap to discharge yourself of static electricity before touching
any parts chassis.
• Be aware of sharp edges of the case that can cut you easily.
• Use a damp microfiber or lint-free cloth and wipe the case and cover (glass) gently.

Internal Parts of the System Unit

Inside the chassis or computer cases where you can find the motherboard, processors,
memory, storage, PSU, fans and many more. Over time the fans suck tons of air that may
contain dirt and small debris like foods and hair stands that will accumulate inside the unit.
Which can cause overheating ang corrosion on some delicate components.

Tools: Screwdriver, anti-static mat and strap, tweezers, brush, microfiber cloth, and air blower
or compressed air.
Safety Precautions:

• Do not use excessive force when disassembling and assembling the components.
• Do not spray or use any liquid in cleaning the components, just use a dry microfiber
cloth.
• Use an anti-static mat and strap to discharge yourself of static electricity before touching
any component of the system unit.

Decluttering Cables (Optional)

Cable management is a must and recommended for custom built computers for proper
airflow and aesthetics. Unlike professionally manufactured computers, ordinary built computers
do not arrive with nicely tucked away cabling that fits just right. So, the best way to make your
case more secure and organized is to use zip ties or velcro.

Procedure:

1. To start you will need a pack of zip ties or velcro. It does not matter what size they are if
they can fit around all your cables.
2. Begin by disconnecting all cables that will need to be tied. Be sure to memorized where
they are connected for less trouble later.
3. When you have a cable or set of cables grouped to your liking, wrap a zip tie or velcro
around it then tighten it. Grab your scissors and cut the excess.
4. Repeat this step for as many cables as possible.
5. You can then tuck them away to reduce their visibility and give your computer’s a bice
airflow and cleaner look.

• Heat is your computer's worst enemy. Over time, dust buildup inside your computer could
undermine its cooling efficiency, resulting in shorter life spans for your computer's
components. To help keep your computer running cool, clean the inside of your computer
every two (2) to six (6) months.

• If you keep your computer on the ground or on carpet, try to remember to clean your
computer every six months or so. If your computer sits on a desk, yearly intervals should
be fine.
