TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT IN ASSEMBLING AND DISASSEMBLING SYSTEM

UNIT

Name: ___________________________________________ Section: ____________________

I. Learning Objective:

Obtain tools, equipment and testing devices needed to carry out installation
work in accordance with established and safety check for correct operation and
safety (TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-Ia-e-28)

Time Allotment: 6 hours

II. Key Concepts:

You don't need an expensive toolkit to build your own computer, but there
are a few simple electronics tools that you absolutely must have. All of these can be
easily obtained at almost any computer store or online.

You may already have some of these tools. If not, then the easiest way to get the
tools you need is to purchase a computer repair tool kit that contains all the tools
you'll need, as well as a handy carrying case to keep them organized.

As with all tools, you should buy the best quality computer tools that you can
afford. Good tools last longer and make the job easier. All computer tools should be
non-magnetized.

There are four categories in Computer Hardware Tools:

1. Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Tools

2. Hand Tools
3. Cleaning Tools
4. Diagnostic Tools

Elector-Static Discharge (ESD) Tools - An antistatic wrist strap, ESD wrist strap,
or ground bracelet is an antistatic device used to safely ground a person working
on very sensitive electronic equipment, to prevent the buildup of static electricity
on their body, which can result in electrostatic discharge (ESD).

Example of ESD Tools

1. Anti-static wrist strap – use to prevent ESD damage to computer

equipment.

Proper Use of Antistatic Wrist Strap:

1. Connect the cable to the metal chassis of the computer.
2. Wrap the strap around your wrist.
3. The connection will keep your body at the same voltage (potential) as the
computer.
4. Attach the wire on the same side of the equipment as the arm wearing the
antistatic wrist strap to keep the wire out of the way while you are working.

2. Anti-static mat – use to stand on or place hardware on to prevent

static electricity from building up.

Proper use of Antistatic Mat:

1. Lay the computer on the mat.
2. Connect the computer to the mat with the cable.
3. Connect the mat to a reliable electrical ground with its cable.
4. Now, you and the computer are at ground potential.
Importance of ESD Tools
The primary method of control is to ground (or bring to the same potential)
all conductors that come in contact or near proximity to the electronic device(s).
These conductors include humans, tools, ESD mats, other electronic devices,
boards, connectors, packaging, etc. There are other components to a good ESD
Control program including removal of unnecessary insulators, shielding, ionization,
environmental controls, training, education and top-down compliance.
Hand Tools - is a device for performing work on a material or a physical system
using only hands. Hand tools can be used manually or electrically powered, using
electrical current.
Proper use of Hand Tools:
1. Use the proper type and size of screwdriver by matching it to the screw.
2. Do not over tighten screws because the threads may become stripped.

email address: ruthchilito.manlimos@deped.gov.ph
Example of Hand Tools

1. Flat Head Screwdriver – use to loosen or tighten slotted screws.

2. Philips Head Screwdriver – use to loosen or tighten cross-head screws.

3. Torx or Star Screwdriver - use to loosen or tighten screws that have a

star-like depression on the top, a feature that is mainly found on laptop.

4. Hex Driver – sometimes called a nut driver, is use to tighten nuts in the
same way that a screwdriver tightens screws.

5. Needle-Nose Pliers – use to hold small parts.

6. Wire Cutter – use to strip and cut wires.

7. Tweezers – use to manipulate small parts.

8. Part Retriever – use to retrieve parts from location that is too small for your
hand to fit.

Importance of Hand Tools

Using tools appropriately helps anticipate accidents and harm to equipment

and individuals. For every work there is a correct device and tools. Make sure that
you just are familiar with the proper utilize of each instrument which the right
device is utilized for the current task. Skilled utilization of devices and program
makes the work less troublesome and guarantees that assignments are performed
legitimately and safely.

Cleaning Tools - the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when maintaining or
repairing computers. Using these tools ensures that computer components are not
damaged during cleaning.
Proper Use of Cleaning Tools :

1. Use mild cleaning solution and lint-free cloth to clean computer cases,
outside of monitor, LCD screen, CRT screen and mouse.
2. Use compressed air to clean heat sinks.
3. Use Isopropyl alcohol and lint-free swabs to clean RAM.
4. Use hand-held vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to clean a
keyboard.
Example of Cleaning Tools

1. Lint-free Cloth – is used to clean different computer components without

scratching or leaving debris.

2. Compressed Air – is used to blow away dust and debris from different
computer parts without touching the components.

3. Cable Ties – is used to bundle cables neatly inside and outside of a

computer.

4. Parts Organizer – is used to hold screw, jumpers, fasteners and other small
parts and prevents them from getting mixed together.

Importance of Cleaning Tools

When you clean your computer, it’s not just about dusting off your screen
and wiping down the keyboard. It’s important to clean the hard drive, updating
software, and getting rid of outdated programs. Cleaning your computer’s hardware
makes the entire system run more smoothly and keep it running longer. Regular
cleaning protects not only your investment, but the important data stored on it as
well. Every few days or so, give the screen a good wipe and empty the crumbs out of
the keyboard. Those simple tasks will reduce the risk of it breaking and overall help
the computer work better.

Diagnostic Tools - Computers are easier to use and more dependable with each
new generation of hardware and operating system update, but that does not mean
they are problem-free.

Proper use of Diagnostic Tools :

1. Turn your multimeter dial to V to mean voltage.

2. Then insert the black lead into the common jack in the multimeter. Also,
insert the red lead into the volt jack.
3. Try connecting the test leads to the circuit, starting with the black then the
red one.
4. Now read the measurement which is displayed.

Example of Diagnostic Tools

Multimeter / multitester – is used to test the integrity of circuits and the quality
of electricity in computer components.

Loopback Adapter – is used to test the functionality of computer ports.

Importance of Diagnostic Tools

Computer diagnostics tools are pieces of software that give you the
knowledge you need to be able to potentially repair your own computer. Some of
these tools come built in to your operating system while others come from 3rd
party software developers. Either way, these tools help save you time and money.
Computer diagnostic tools can be used scan your computer’s hard drive, check
your ram for errors, check CPU temp and give you information about any other
devices connected to your computer. These tools are made to find problems
that may be disrupting your computer’s normal performance. Once a problem is
found, you can then plan your repair.
